prolouge: a quiet place

it was a normal day. it was sunny, the weather was nice, and i was with my good friend marcus' family watching his baseball game. soon enough it was his time to bat. i go over to him.
"marcus, i can see you're nervous, don't be. there's nothing to worry about."
"what if i strike out?? wouldn't that be embarrassing??"
"no marcus, it happens. you'll be fine," i say while giving him a price of gum his mom, evelyn had given me.
i go back to sit with regan and lee. marcus steps up to the plate as the pitcher almost hits him with the ball. he looks over at me and i sign, "breathe. relax. you'll be fine." i had learned sign language to communicate with regan easily. he nods at me and gets ready for the next pitch. strike.
"it's ok marcus! you got it!" i cheer.
he looks over at me and laughs a bit. when the next ball is pitched, marcus is looking up to the sky. the umpire calls a strike. i look up to see what marcus is looking at. i see a black cloud. but it wasn't just any dark rain cloud. it was weird and there were noises. everyone starts packing up to leave.
"hey y/n why don't you come with us, we'll take you home," offers evelyn.
"um it's ok i think. i live really close to here," i stumble.
"um ok, whatever you want to do..." she says
marcus waves goodbye to me, i wave back.

marcus, man that boy. i've had a crush on marcus since i can remember. i've known him since the baby bottle days. i always thought he had a crush on me too, but i never bothered to ask him about it. we're really good friends, and i don't wanna mess it up.

as the abbott family leaves, i stumble around, not really sure where to go. all of the sudden, i hear a big boom. an enormous creature landing on the ground, shaking the earths surface. i run. i don't know where i'm running. but i run. i make sure to be quiet, and i head into the woods.
