"The dogs. They did head-pats," you reiterate.
Abruptly, Sans launches himself off the stool and immediately rushes over to the stage, almost toppling over the microphone stand as he grips it in his hand. Several people eye him with a befuddled expression to the commotion as feedback from the mic drowns out the chitter-chatter from the crowd.
"hey fellas," Sans chuckles anxiously. Many turn to look at him but a few persist on talking to their friends. Subtle hints of frustration and nervousness pattern his face in tiny beads of sweat. "so you know the dogs at the front, right?"
Shortly, his voice blurs out from behind you when you shift your attention to Grillby next to you shaking his head in disappointment while handing over the phone to you as Sans explains the whole dog-ordeal in the background.
"Sans swore that he taught them how to do pat-downs. Either he rewarded them with head-pats and they got confused, or he didn't teach them at all, that lazybones. Sincerest apologies. We're going to have to arrange an impromptu pat-down session."
"Yeah, that- wai- hold on," you discontinue your sentence, unintentionally eying Grillby up and down prompting a head-tilt from him. "You're not saying that you're gonna be the one to do pat-downs, right? I mean, no offense but you're made out of fire and... you know."
He gestures a no with his hands, waving and crossing each other as he shakes his head. "No, I'm afraid that since apparently the dogs don't know how to do it and I'm made of fire, the only ones who can do it are Sans and the techs who are working in the back to fix up a few things."
"And hasn't it been a week since you've opened? They've just been doing head-pats this entire week and no one's said anything?"
Grillby nods defeatedly. "Unfortunately so. Thank you for notifying us at the very least, I wish someone had told us earlier, but we haven't had anyone say anything. We can only hope that no one brought anything inside or else we'd have to worry about throwing food away."
Momentarily, from the corner of your eye, you spot a tint of blue whizzing through the crowd. It's Sans excusing himself to several people when he unintentionally bumps into them.
"this is bad... i mean, it's kinda funny though," Sans comments as he rejoins the two of you. Grillby shoots a glare at him, but he doesn't shut down his goofiness. "okay, okay, when i said i taught them, i didn't actually do it yet, but i promised myself i would. except i kinda forgot, which you can't blame me for. i have to write a bunch of stuff for shows, so..."
Sans trails off as he notices Grillby clench his fists, fire burning brighter than before. Specks of flame sputtered from the top of his head and onto the countertop before fading and ultimately disappearing. Cautiously so as not to be burnt, Sans pulls you a little ways apart from him in that split second he finds him in anguish before immediately calming down the next. With a more restrained expression, Grillby turns away from the both of you with slumped shoulders to shut off the lights lining the bottom edge of the counter, signifying that the bar was temporarily closed.
Beside you, Sans watches him in shock and guilt simultaneously after Grillby's reaction. "sorry, sorry. i was being an idiot. it's not that i don't care for the safety of others, i just suck at doing my job."
The only response that Grillby could muster was an irked nod of agreement to his statement, ignoring his excuse for his shortcomings. Still disappointed, Grillby hangs his head with a more blanked expression as he grabs his phone and texts a message to you, leaving Sans awkwardly hanging by your side.
"Sorry about that. Did I hurt you in any way?"
"No, I'm okay. Didn't feel a thing."
"That's good. I apologize on Sans' behalf as well, I understand that he is busy with many activities, but blatantly lying to me and endangering many lives is not okay. I will have to go in a moment to notify techs to help us out with pat-downs. While they are doing that, I will have to talk to Sans in private. For now, please just give him some company and perhaps make him feel really guilty so he goes home thinking about what he's done. Joking, but I wouldn't mind if you did."
