A gust of wind poured into the small room, swaying the curtains. The sound of the trees rustling was relaxing. It put Evelyn at ease as she gazed out the window. The sea stretched on as far as she could see. The sky was a bright blue, and puffy clouds elegantly floated silently in the air. Evelyn often wished she could be a cloud.
She reached out her hand and waved it side to side slowly like a wave. The sound of the mail carrier's bike echoed in the distance. She looked down and saw the mail boy at one of the houses below her. He got off his bike and slipped a letter into the door. "Theodore!" Evelyn shouted as he climbed onto his bike.
He looked upward and finally found Evelyn peaking her head out of her window. He waved up at her, smiling. Evelyn had waved to him every day since he had been hired as a mail carrier. She shook her hands at him with joy and shouted, "It's a nice day, isn't it?"
He looked around, and took a deep breath in. "Yeah, I suppose it is a nice day!" looking back up at Evelyn.
"Would you like to go down to the docks with me later?" She asked nervously, hoping for a reply from him.
He hesitated for a second, looking down at his bike. As he looked up, butterflies began to fill Evelyn's stomach. "I'd be more than happy to acquaint you down at the docks after I finish my deliveries, Milady!"
Evelyn shot onto her bed and screamed into her neatly woven pillow. She peaked her head back out the window and saw Theodore staring up at her, with the biggest smile she had ever seen. She realized she was blushing and covered up her rosy cheeks, embarrassed. She threw out her hand and gave him a thumbs up. Theodore shot back a thumbs up and he looked back down. "Meet me down at the docks at four!" He exclaimed, setting the mail into his pouch.
Evelyn watched him ride away around the corner. After he turned out of sight, she plopped onto her bed and covered her face. "I can't believe I just did that!" She yelled into her pillow.
Immediately after getting over her excitement, she hopped off of her bed and opened her door. She walked into a small bathroom. Her hair was a beautiful blonde and her eyes were a bright blue. She was very pretty. She grabbed a blue and white dress, and put it on. It was puffy around the arms, and in the back around the waist. The blue wrapped around her chest, like a jacket, and spread down through the underside of the sleeves. The dress was long, and reached down all the way to her feet. She let down her silky hair and braided it on both sides. She then put her hair into a bun and tied it with a bright red ribbon. She put on black high heel boots and slowly waited.
As time passed, Evelyn became more anxious. She couldn't wait to see Theodore. He was 17 just as she was. She had asked him to the docks because down there was a very cute market, and she wanted to pick out a birthday present for him. His birthday was tomorrow so she wanted to pick out something he liked.Evelyn's birthday was June 13, and his was March 9.
Finally the time came. Evelyn raced down the stairs of her building and burst out the doors. She walked down to the docks filled with excitement. The sea was glistening as the sun shone onto the waves. The sea air filled Evelyn's nose as she took a deep breath in. The market was bustling. Tents were set up in rows, spreading all the way down the seaside. People were walking around browsing the tiny shops. Butterflies swelled up in Evelyn's stomach as she watched the couples walk up and down the market. "Evelyn!" A voice rang out
Evelyn looked around, and finally spotted Theodore. Theodore had short, messy brunette hair and he had the prettiest green eyes she had ever seen. He waved at her from the road, and started walking towards her. He was wearing a white button down shirt, with a leather hilt running across his chest from his shoulder. His pants were a tan-green color and he was wearing black boots. Evelyn blushed as she stared at him walking towards her. He was taller than Evelyn. She was 5,5 and he was 5,8.Theodore brushed his hand through his hair and Evelyn couldn't help but turn away to hide her big smile that had grown on her face. He finally reached her. "Hey, Evelyn!" He greeted, looking around at the market.
"Hey! how were the deliveries?" She asked, curiously.
He sighed and responded in a tired voice, "Exhausting. This one old lady kept on asking me all of these questions about the boats for some reason, and she wouldn't stop so I had to make up an excuse to get away!"Evelyn chuckled as he put his hand on his face.
"Anyway," he said looking back up, "shall we?"Evelyn stared into his eyes as he grabbed her hand and walked her towards the crowd of people.
They walked down the market looking at the shops. Some were selling fruits, fish, dresses, masks, shoes, and so on. "Theodore, look!" Evelyn exclaimed, pointing at a particular shop.
They both walked over, holding hands. The little tent was selling jewelry. "See anything you like?" Theodore askedEvelyn took a long look, and picked up a gold ring, that had a red crystal embedded in the center of it. But she put it down, remembering she was here to buy him a birthday present. "Not anything in particular." She said, going to the next shop.
Theodore turned to the person selling them and said, I'll get this one, picking up the ring Evelyn had examined."So Theodore, what kind of things do you like?" Evelyn asked, trying to get an idea of what to buy him.
He didn't respond at first, but then he looked at her. "I really want a locket." He said grabbing Evelyn's hand. She smiled and blushed. What was this feeling inside her stomach? She felt like she could just do anything in this moment.
Evelyn peeled away for a second without Theodore noticing, and set her gaze on a large leather pouch. It was larger than Theodore's old mail pouch, so she thought it would be a perfect gift. She paid for it and hid it behind her back. Evelyn looked at Theodore, he was standing still, staring up at the sky. She hadn't realized that it had gotten dark, and looked up as well.Suddenly, like a star had exploded, the sky shattered into a million different colors. Evelyn gazed into the sky dumbfounded. Fireworks exploded in the air, lighting up the streets. Theodore just froze, gaping at the many different colors. Slowly, he walked towards the water and sat on the edge, dangling his feet over the dock. Evelyn sat down next to him, staring into the distance. The water was radiating many different colors from the fireworks. Evelyn had never seen anything like this. It was such a beautiful moment. The waves softly crashed against the shore, and a slight breeze blew tiny strands of hair across Evelyn's face. She closed her eyes and listened. It was the most relaxing silence you could ever hear. Theodore suddenly spoke up. "Thanks for inviting me tonight"
Evelyn opened her eyes and looked over at Theodore. As they stared into each other's eyes, Evelyn pulled out the mail bag and handed it to Theodore. "Happy birthday, Theodore"
A firework blazed the sky as they looked at each other. In this moment, Evelyn finally realized what the feeling in her stomach was. After two years of waving to Theodore from the window, and shouting at him in the streets. After two years of constantly hanging out with him, and growing as friends, she finally realized. She was feeling love. Theodore said nothing, for a while.
He looked back at her, and his face spoke louder than any words she'd ever heard. His beautiful green eyes were glossy, and his cheeks were red. The sweetest smile was spread across his face and he just sat there, staring at Evelyn. The feeling in her stomach became more intense, and she seized her chance. When she looked back at him, she opened up her arms and hugged him tightly.
Evelyn didn't want to break the moment, but she asked a simple question. "Can I deliver the mail with you tomorrow?"
Theodore was silent, then he chuckled, and that chuckle broke into a laugh.
"Of course you can!" he exclaimed hugging Evelyn tightly. They both smiled and looked towards the sea again, holding hands. "This was... fun Evelyn." Theodore chuckled, as a firework burst in the sky.
His green eyes glistened in the light. "Yeah, yeah it was." She agreed, staring at the dark horizon.
