Umbra is Shadow in Latin.

Description: A shadow is simply an absence of light...it is something that light can never touch...

A/N I'm gonna use names in the plots that y'all can change, it's just easier so nothing gets confusing!

Characters:

Shadows

Eric: God of darkness (personification of complete darkness, shadowy, surrounded by black mist). He is rude, disrespectful arrogant and egotistical. 20 years old

Onyx: Goddess of the night (very shadowy, thin, surrounded by black mist). Very quiet and calm. She doesn't do bad things but the dolls often assume she does because of her looks. 16 years old.

Dolls (aka Humans)

Simon: very nice and selfless. Always helps others and treats people with kindness regardless of how they treat him. (Eric's Doll) 20 years old.

Saiya: Rude and self centered. She feels entitled to everything she wants and doesn't care about people's feelings. She doesn't physically do anything wrong but she says a lot of things that hurt peoples feelings. (Onyx's Doll) 16 years old.

Since the shadows don't have faces or other defining features, the Dolls are used as their faces. They usually don't have the same personality but they are hand picked by the shadow family elders to look exactly like the personified version of the shadow they are representing.

Shadows don't get their dolls until their 16th birthday.

Prologue: A grandmother telling her young grandchildren a story, about the shadows and their dolls. We learn that Eric and Onyx are siblings and that they have 2 other siblings that are the personifications of light and day. We also learn that the shadows live in the shadow realm and they cannot leave. We learn that Simon has been Eric's doll since the boys both turned 16. Onyx is yet to turn 16 and get her Doll. We also learn that humans who have been used as Dolls don't remember events from their past lives but they remember the people that were in their lives.

One: it is the morning of Saiya's sweet sixteen. She doesn't want to celebrate it due to the disappearance of her older brother, Simon, 4 years prior. Her very rich parents pressure her into having a big extravagant party and invite all her friends. Saiya goes to sleep after her party believing there is a curse of her, and that she'll disappear that night too.
Switch POV
Onyx is getting ready for the giant ball that her family has planned to crown her as shadow princess. She will be getting her Doll since it is finally her 16th birthday. Her older brother finally decides to start treating her like a princess and less like a servant. Her Doll comes at the end of the ball and she cannot believe how beautiful she is. She finally realizes that this is what she would look like if she had a face.

I think it would fit into the paranormal section. This wouldn't really be an urban book but in my head the human characters were African American and Hispanic.
