Code Blue. Room 184. Code Blue.
The intern flew down the hallway with her crash cart, slamming into his door and cursing before turning and dragging the cart after her. He listened to the racing footsteps of doctors and screaming of the family.
"Please! Don't let her die!"
Micah stirred, prying his eyes open to see what was happening. Flashes of blue swarmed outside of his window and the intruding scent of bleach washed over him. His arms were heavy, pinned to the scratchy sheet underneath him. He blinked, trying to get his vision clear as he gazed at the white gown he adorned, a thin blanket laid atop him delicately.
Another scream from outside the room startled him, a devastated cry that had the mother falling to her knees and her husband joining her. He frowned as a blurred figure walked into his room with a cup in their hands. When they turned to him, they dropped it and rushed over and fussed over him.
His eyes wouldn't focus, and he felt wet drops fall onto his cheeks, the soft sobbing of the person drawing his attention away from the commotion.
"Micah!" they called as the room began to take shape.
The machines whirred and beeped obnoxiously as he groaned, and the person squeezed him so hard he couldn't breathe.
"He's awake!" they screamed toward the door, and he raised his arms to try and push himself up.
Another figure ran into the room and laughed, relieved, as they rushed over to him and pressed a button on the side of the bed to raise the higher half. He blinked again, briefly seeing the round, freckled face of his nurse before it blurred again. His arm ached as he felt the IV and tried to pull it out, only to be stopped by both figures.
"Do you know where you are?"
He scrunched his face and listened to the unfamiliar voice asking him multiple questions that went over his head. The person beside him clung onto his hand as though his life depended on it, as though he would slip away again. He shifted. Yet another person came in and through the haziness he saw a large grin with a crooked tooth.
"It's nice to meet you, Micah," they said.
He cleared his throat and looked between the three, realising Kato was the one beside him, face blotchy and red. The doctor at his side passed the other a clipboard with a pen attached to the top, stepped back, and held their hands behind their back as they watched.
"Don't be alarmed, you're in the hospital," his surgeon explained as she looked over at Kato. "You've been in a medically induced coma because you were in an accident. Do you remember?"
He shook his head and heard everything else she said before leaving, but he didn't listen. He turned to Kato and grabbed her arm, ignoring the tears tracking down her face as he glanced at the door.
"Where's Oryn?"
"Who?" Kato asked, smile faltering.
"Oryn," he insisted. "And Phoenix and Liliana."
Kato tried to pull his hand off her arm. "Micah, you're hurting me."
"Where are they? How did I get here?" he demanded, trying again to pull the needle out but his fingers wouldn't cooperate.
She swallowed and started crying, although no longer from happiness. "You were in a car crash. You needed surgery."
He lifted a hand to his head and felt the bandage wrapped tightly around it. His eyes widened and his heart sped up and Kato spoke again, rubbing her arm where he had grabbed it.
