"Mental Immortality"

Chapter One:

"Life of Bryan"

"If you really want to hear about myself, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were divorced and all, after they had me, and all that my family, school friends, and the world said of me but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."

"I live in the streets of Broadway ,New York City, USA. Growing without my parents was not so easy,I was helped by my uncle and grandaunt. "Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices makes you".My Grandaunt always told me; "the choices we make have a major impact on the life we live".Make the right choices on daily basis so that you may live an authentic life that is true to who you want to be".Be brave and bold with the choices you make". "You are free to make whatever choice you want, but you are not free from the consequences of the choices". Life without my parents was hell,according to my aunt they were probably alive, but I had no need for them because they abadoned me at a time I needed them the most"."But that's bygones.

Uh oh!, less I forget my name is Bryan, I'm a Nigerian, but reside at New York City, USA , a biomedical undergraduate from The School of Medicine in New York University (N.Y.U). NYU was Founded in 1831 by a farsighted group of prominent New Yorkers, the "University of the City of New York University(as NYU was originally known ) was envisioned from the start as something new: The institution was metropolitan in character, democratic in spirit, and responsive to the demands of a bustling commercial culture. Nevertheless it was a school for students who loved their books and wanted to "beat the nights" and it was a school for those that loved pleasures, parties,romance and all forms of jamborees; and probably that was my category: I loved school I loved smart girls, party and the rest. But mental rest was the cause of my timidity, academic and social flaws. I was always famous for failure,I never was the best. Each time I got home with my grades my uncle would always say ,"aren't you to useless to cope? "your supposed to be in the trade line". or "Your mother and father were so ashamed of you boy no wonder they dumped you on the trash can" ,he said hurtfully. Every semester that passed by my uncle always reminded me of how I was an embarrassment for getting those poor average grades. But my Grandaunt would always say the best things to me, she always gave me hope , and motivation to work hard she always said ," live him Sam hard work and effort produce perfection". And I always believed her, she had so much faith in me that I would always feel confident to prove my uncle, and the "social world" wrong someday.

I walked into the class room feeling so timid and ashamed,I had messed up again last year, I even made a public show of myself passing Catherine to biology that year. Let me explain who Catherine was : "Catherine was our very best on my department, she was so fast at answering questions, thinking , remembering hard stuff and too cerebral to compete with no one ever passed her in grades she was a genius, she had a lot of friends but kept the cerebral ones around her, and her cliques were witty and intimidating to talk to. Although Catherine was cerebral, she was also a snub, proud, arrogant,loud and a saucy extrovert. And probably i was her jest for the new academic year. Unlike her I had no one to talk to just Alisha who was an average student who always helped me in my school projects and assignments.

[Catherine's POV]:

"Look who it is? It's the Famous loser: last semester he bragged to get the best grades in biology...hah! what a braggart loser", i giggled with my friends laughing and making jests of him. In contempt I looked at the loser sitting behind me so alone in his cowardice. The remembrance of how he bragged Last year caused a lot of tickles to my body. "Ha ha ha hi hi hi", i laughed with my friends.

We had chemistry with several courses this year and i had prepared so bad to get more higher grade points for the second semester first level. But for today we had chemistry and I needed to pay rapt attention to this scientific course.

And suddenly an old woman walked into the class with pile of papers and a textbook, sure it was our chemistry lecturer ,very slim tall and lanky she inscribed the topic on the white board :"Atomic Theory -The Atomic Periodic Table". Good morning class my name is ms Karen,am probably handling this course for your level. She went on explaining further: "An atom is defined as the basic particle that composes a chemical element. Atomic theory, ancient philosophical speculations that all things can be accounted for by innumerable combinations of hard, small, indivisible particles (called atoms)of various sizes but of the same basic material; or the modern scientific theory of matter according to which the chemical elements that combine to form".she kept on explaining further information and asked;

"Now class,

How are the atomic theory and periodic table related?"

"Me mam!" I said with enthusiasm.

"Okay tell us dear" she answered,gesticulating her hands for me to get up and answer.

"Okay let me say,

One (1)they atomic theory establishes the concept of atoms and how they compose matter. And two (2)electrons are organized into shells and sub shells about the nucleus of an atom. And lastly three(3) the chemical elements are arranged in a chart called periodic table.

"Magnificent!, A round of applause for her", Ms Karen been dumbfounded, praised me as they class clapped for me with so much joy, praises and rapturous cheers all around me, all the gorgeous boys wrote me letters to have lunch with me, one wrote; " Cathie your too smart, let's have lunch love": and many more which I turned down. I was a person who shunned pleasure,but I believed in books first rather than romance, I. knew what i was looking for, I was so proud of myself.

"I think our time for this class has overshoot", ms Johnson said."we'll continue next time, for your next class read up on "Quantum Numbers". She said with so much delight as she happily worked out of the lecture hall with her textbooks and lecture notes with me by her side giggling at every random gist she said.
