Panting, I round the corner and climb into one of my hiding spots in the side of an apartment building to rest. Usually, I would have kept going a couple of blocks more before stopping, but for some reason, my legs are feeling weak. I guess it's from the extra weight. I'm used to stealing just enough for my sister and I for maybe three days of extra food and money. This time, however, I'm stealing for myself, my sister, and about ten other people. The people who ran the orphanage never liked how the older kids stole, but now, there's no daily meals, no matter how small they were before. There isn't even a tattered old bed to sleep on tonight. I quickly push that thought away. At least no one died. At least you're alive. Tired of dwelling on the whole matter, I cautiously pull the watch out of my pocket. It was probably the most sophisticated looking thing I had ever remembered holding. It was a gold watch that had with a royal blue clock face, mother-of-pearl clock hands, and a light blue light at the center. The light was so mesmerizing that I didn't even notice the whirring noises coming from the watch. The more and more I looked at the light, the more and more everything else receded onto darkness. I knew I had to look away, but I couldn't. BANG! I snapped out of my hypnotized state when a black van suddenly parked in the ally. At first I decided to wait it out, but then I realized that the van was blocking my only exit, and worse, the men inside were coming right at me. As soon as I made the connection, the blue light illuminating my hiding nook intensified. Panicking, I dropped the item. It was too late. I felt a sharp pain in my hand seconds before everything went dark.
I had been followed the whole time...
After dedicating that single thought to memory, I gave in to the void of nothingness awaiting me.
