Prologue -

Katherine McBride was four years old when her mother; Helen left, leaving her, her younger brother; William and her father; Frank without a wife or mother.

Harry, had told her a few years later that on what was otherwise a perfectly normal Wednesday evening he'd returned from the factory where he worked, to find his wife sat on the bottom of the stairs, packed suitcases laying in the hallway, and that the only thing she had said to him was that she had to leave and then, as if on cue, a taxi had sounded its horn out in the street. That was it he said; no reason, no goodbye she was just gone.

Family friends had told Katherine as a child that her mother loved her dearly, and that had always been a sticking point for her; how could a loving mother just leave a small daughter and even worse a sixteen month old son with no explanation or excuse. Over the years she had wished for someone to plait her hair or wipe her tears when he first boyfriend broke her heart. Worst of all she had wanted a mother to help her get ready for prom, help her pick out a dress, do her hair, her make up and take her picture.

These may seem like mundane occurrences when your mother is actually their but for Katherine each one felt like she had been abandoned all over again and the pain hit her anew. By the time she reached college drink got her through these moments, or at least glossed over them for the night. However, once she'd got to university Katherine had learnt to veer her mind away from the painful thoughts and almost managed to forget her mother, most of the time.

Now twenty-four and married to James, Kate knew that she should be happy, ecstatic even, especially as they were expecting their first baby. Sitting there staring at the monitor however, she felt a twinge of fear over the question she had never been able to answer, how her mother could leave, and over the thought that maybe she would do the same. After all she'd been told often enough that she was her mothers double in every other way and was haunted by the fact that every time she looked in the mirror her mother's green eyes stared back at her. Looking at the tiny life on the monitor she heard the doctor tell her that she was having a boy, and at that moment Kate decided; turning to James she sighed and said; "I have to find Helen, I have to know why she left."

But she had no idea where to start, she wasn't even sure of Helen's maiden name and Kate knew that hell would freeze before Frank helped her look for his estranged wife.
