The three of us went to the bonfire at the lake. Jake, Agnes and I, although Nancy begged mom to let her go too. Agnes, like always, had already establish her territory. I was left with Jake and, since the only person we know is Carter, we kept to ourselves. We both sat on the same log that I sat on earlier. Not a sound was made between us. Good job! I thought to myself. There were a lot of people in the lake, most of them close to my age. Who knew teenagers still spends some time outside. If I didn't know better, I would have thought they were stuck on their computers all day and all night, but I guess not.
The bonfire was placed on the middle of the sandy area of the lake and people just kept bringing dry logs to keep the fire alive. Drinks were also being carried in can and bottles. One girl offered me a cup but I declined it. I am not a party animal, so I don't do drinking. Jake on the other grabbed the red cup from the girl's hand like lighting. I forgot this is his natural environment.
I spotted Carter running down towards us carrying a box of drinks. Oh boy! I thought. He stopped running as soon he reached the log where jake and I were sitting. I can tell he already had a couple drinks. His face were already red, almost like an apple. He looked at me, then jake and then the awkward gap between the two of us.
"Squish in" he said. Gesturing his hands inwards to his stomach. We scooted slowly. "More" he said. We moved even closer together until we were shoulder to shoulder and arm to arm.
"Much better," Carter said.
"Dude! Where've you been?" Jake said as he took a sip from the red cup.
"I went to get drinks" Carter replied, raising the box of beers. "We might run out" he laughed and looked at me. "Where's your drink?" He asked me.
"I don't drink" I said.
"Party POOPER!!!" He said loudly, which attracted a couple of people close to where we sat. I rolled my eyes at him.
"You are such a diva" he said as he took a sip from his bottle.
"Don't worry Carter, she's always like that." Jake said. I looked at the both of them and gave them a snarled look. Diva! Me? I am like the nicest person you'll ever meet and these two idiots thinks I'm a DIVA! I am nothing like Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera. I don't act like them, dress like them or talk like them.
"I am not a DIVA, I just don't like you" I said to carter. "Or you" I said to jake.
"Thought you lads were friends" carter said, squishing himself between jake and I.
"We were" jake said. I heard a whistle from my left side. It was Carter imitating a missile.
"Okay well, love to chat about your friendship and all but let's go check out the fire" he said. The three of us headed where the fire sat. Carter brought three tiny logs to us so we can sit near the fire.
"What are they doing?" I whispered to Jake pointing at a group of people who were busy chucking their stuff in the fire. One girl in the groups threw her shirt and shoes in, another threw a picture, which I guessed was an old boyfriend of her, while some threw in their beer bottles and can.
"So were talking now?" He whispered back. SHOOT! I thought to myself.
"Just answer my question" I whispered back.
"Why are you being so rude?" He whispered back. I scoffed and turned away from him. So rude I thought. He didn't have to do that. He could have just answered the question, but no he chose to be an ass.
"Carter, what are they doing?" I asked carter.
"Just trying to get rid of memories" he said.
"Memories?"
"Yeah or just old stuff. I don't know, you American have pretty weird rituals" he said playing with a burnt wood. "Why?" He asked me.
"Nothing. I was just wondering"
"Okay." He said as he chucked some peanuts in his mouth. I need to find myself some female friends in this camp I thought. The testosterone level was too high for me and my liking.
I've managed to lose myself just by staring out in water where the moon's reflection shines. Apart from the noises of drunk teenagers and young adults it was actually pretty peaceful. Just like last night. Carter went to for a midnight swim with his English friends while Jake met some football players from another state. Which left me all alone. If there was a contest for being a loner, I am 100 percent id win it. I tried looking for Agnes but it looked like she has already left, I think. I moved back to the log I sat on earlier, trying to move myself away from the crowd. As the night progressed the crowd around the fire started to grow and there were more people tossing their stuff into the fire pit. Sparks from the fire glows liked fireflies as the fire got bigger and bigger.
"What a scene eh?" A voice came out of nowhere. I turned my head to see a guy and a girl sitting on the same log as me.
"Yeah, it's pretty cool" I said back.
"Did you throw anything?" The girl asked me as she tilted her head forward to see me. Her black hair hanged loosely and her dark eyes were shining from the moon. She had a blue tank on paired with faded short and gladiator sandals.
"Uhh no, Carter, " I said.
"Why?" The guy asked as he adjusted his sunglasses that sat on his head.
"I don't have anything to throw," I said.
"There has to be something, I mean even I threw in pamphlets and Andrew threw his drum sticks," she said.
"Your drum sticks?" I asked him
"Yeah, long story, was" Andrew said awkwardly. "Do you guys want drinks?" He asked us both. I shook my head while the girl nodded. Andrew stood up and walked to chillers which were place on the opposite side of where the fire was.
"Are you by yourself?" The girl asked me as she moved closer to me.
"No I'm actually with people whom I've lost throughout the night" I replied back to her. She let off a little laugh. "What about you guys?" I asked her.
"That's what happened to me and Andrew. Carter invited us here and we totally lost him" she replied.
"You know Carter too?" I asked.
"Yeah, the British fellow?"
"Yeah." I nodded.
"Odd guy." She said under breath.
"He is. He got me and my book wet the other day" I said.
"You're Marissa?" She asked me which took me by a surprise.
"Yeah, how do you know?" I asked her.
"I'm Cleo. I'm the reason why you got hit by the water the other day" she said with laughter. "I'm so sorry"
" it's okay." I said. Our conversation lasted till Andrew came back with their drinks. A few feet from where we were sitting I spotted Jake with a girl sitting on his lap. I don't want to know why shes on his and where they were doing. All I know is that something in me broke. The same feeling I felt last night. Only this time I felt anger and hatred, not to him but to her. My heart slowly felt like it was breaking. What is this? I asked myself quietly.
