Dear little book,
Mama was loathe to give me my own diary, as the last time I had one, I left it on the beach in the rain and it was ruined. But that was when I was ten. Surely I have matured by now? I am fourteen. I will be fifteen in November. I am much older than the girl I used to be.
And so I was pleased when I got this book from Mama. It shows that perhaps she too does think I am growing up. It has been almost four and a half years! And she is considering granting Grace one – and Grace is only seven! I do not believe this is fair. But then, didn’t Grace grow up a proper young lady? Proper enough, anyway? As for me… growing up with Luke and his friends, who are a little more than a year older than me did not do much good, I believe. Ah well. I do not regret it. I would not be who I am today if not for that.
I have heard of people naming their diaries. What shall I name you, little book? I cannot think of anything. Perhaps I shall continue calling you “little book.” It is very much easier.

Dear little book,
It is harder than I thought to write in a diary, especially if nothing ever happens, which nothing ever does on this island. Today, Margaret came over. Now that school is over, I though we would hardly ever see each other, but she turned up today. I walked with her along the cliff, and then showed her the secret steps down. When we finally arrived, breathless and laughing, we walked along the beach. I like Margaret the best of my friends; she is the only one who does not mind my rather tomboyish streak. With Jane and Abby I have to do ladylike things with, and it’s not as much fun. That is not to say I am not ladylike. I fix my hair, braiding it and twisting it up, and I have worried about my looks, I admit. But I do not fuss over my clothes and such. Honestly, I do not understand what girls see in wearing corsets. I cannot stand them. It is impossible to breathe! Sarah wears them; she really is a proper lady. But then, she is eighteen.
But Margaret and I had a wonderful time. I do hope she can come again.

Dear little book,
I have been talking with Joshua, one of the older workers in the field. I love him. He is so jolly, and always has a smile for everyone. He asked me if I was missing school, and I admitted I was. Out here on the plantation, we’re two miles from town, which is not much, really, but we hardly ever hear from anyone at school besides Margaret and her family, which includes Luke’s friend Sam.
I do not know what to talk about. It is much more difficult than I remember! Well, today I took a charcoal stick and some parchment and sat on the beach. I tried to draw the waves, but I could not catch them.
What is there to do around here?
ill give u more later!!! and there's no chapters, just diary entries, just so u know
