Even though my eyes were closed, I could feel that the room was already fully lit by sunlight. I loved to play, run and have fun, but at that moment I just wanted to be stay in bed.
My five minutes didn't last long as an excited scream echoed through the room.
"Wake up everyone! Or we'll be late for breakfast!" Emma, my best friend yelled happily. Emma was always the first to wake up and she managed to be even more excited than me. We all loved Emma's jolly self so we opened our eyes without complaining.
Soon, the morning din had settled through the girls' room and I jumped out of bed. I put on my everyday white uniform and ran a brushed my hair. After we put on our boots, Emma and I started helping the others get ready as we were the oldest.
"Bella! I can't tie my shoes!" One of the children called.
"This boot is mine Shelly!"
"It is not!"
"Stop fighting and start getting ready!" Gilda scolded. Gilda was almost our age so she was also a big help to Emma and me.
"Emma, help me with the shirt please!"
"Bella, the shoes!"
"Calm down kids, don't cry!" I said tenderly. After we got ready, I picked Shelly up and Emma, me, and the kids ran down the halls to breakfast.
"Good morning Don, Conny and Conny's Bunny!" I said as my friends left the bathroom. Don was 10, just like Gilda and Conny was 6. In fact, today was Conny's 6th birthday and also her adoption day! We were all very excited for Conny, especially Don, who was very fond of her.
"Good Morning!" Don said.
"Good morning, Bella!" Conny smiled.
"Yay, we made it!" Said Emma arriving in the hallway holding Phil in her lap.
Lannion and Thoma ran in and bumped into Emma.
She pretended annoyance and turned to them with a giggle.
"I will devour you!!" She smiled waving her arms running after Thoma and Lannion.
I put Shelly on the ground and Thoma grabbed my hand, throwing me in front of him and Lannion.
I hugged the boys and laughed. Phil jumped on Emma's back and we ran into the breakfast room.
"Good morning Norman and Ray!" I said grabbing Shelly's hand.
"Good morning, Bella!" Norman smiled.
"Good morning, Bella." Ray responded with a rare animation.
Ray, Norman, Emma, and I were the elders at Grace Field's orphanage.
We arrived here at the same time and have become bests friends ever since. I was close to everyone but had a special connection with Norman. We were such friends that sometimes I felt like we thought alike. As if we could read each other's minds.
"You two are already excited, and you haven't even had breakfast yet." Norman said with a smile.
"Sometimes I forget, how old are you again? 5?" Ray teased.
"We're 11 just like you!" Emma said annoyed and I let out a laugh. I wasn't the only one, as Mom smothered her laughter with her hand.
Emma turned to Mom and ran to hug her.
"What are you laughing at Mom??" Emma growled. I approached them and Mom and I exchanged smiles.
I winked at her and she winked back.
"Emma, can you come help me, please?" She asked.
"Mommy, I want to restart my entry." Emma whimpered.
"But why? I like your way." Mom replied.
"Who's 5 year old way?" Emma tilted her head.
"The way of someone who cares and loves her siblings." Mom patted Emma's head, and Emma chuckled.
I smiled and walked over to Norman to help him with the dishes.
"Mommy is so affectionate." I said.
"Yes." Norman agreed with a smile.
"I never forget that day you, me, Emma and Ray went to the gate when we were little. Don't get me wrong, I love our life at Grace Field, but sometimes you don't feel like seeing the world outside?" I asked and Norman gave me a curious look.
"Honestly yes. What would you like to do out there, Bella?" He asked.
"Travel the world and discover new things. And you Norman?" I questioned him and once again a smile formed on Norman's lips.
"Me too. Maybe we can meet after we're adopted and see the world together!" He said and smiled.
"It's a wonderful idea." I blinked and Mom asked us to sit down.
I sat next to Emma and across from Norman and Ray.
"Good morning, dear children. Now, let's thank the life that you and your 38 little brothers live here." Mom said putting her hands together. "Thank you for the food."
"Thank you for the food." We repeated it in chorus in a prayer.
We started eating the wonderful food. We had never lacked anything at Grace Field. We lived a very happy life.
After we ate, we got up and Norman, Ray, Emma, Gilda, and I started washing the dishes.
"I don't want to have the daily exams!" Gilda whimpered.
We had daily exams with maths questions, science, etc. It was very difficult, but now the questions were getting too repetitive.
We all walked into the exam room and I sat down in my usual chair.
Before the exam started, I looked around and analyzed the children's expressions. Most looked scared, while others looked bored.
Suddenly, the light went out and our table lit up. Exam time.
A few many minutes later, the light came back on and our tables went out with the sound of the siren announcing the end of the exam.
"I think I got half right!" I heard Thoma saying as I pulled out my headphones.
Exclamations spread at Thoma's sentence.
"I think I was really bad." Conny said without taking her smile off her face. Conny was so cute and sweet! Despite being sad that she was leaving, I was happy that she was being adopted.
Mom walked into the room holding sheets of paper and stopped in front of the blackboard.
"Everyone ready to hear the results? She smiled. No one responded due to nervousness.
"Norman, Ray, Emma and Bella. Congratulations! You four were amazing! You got everything right!" Mom said with a grin from ear to ear.
Emma and I waved our arms in the air in celebration and gave a hi five. The kids started to congratulate us.
"These four are on another level." Lilly said.
"Norman is a genius with a brain to envy. Ray also has an IQ that matches Norman's. Emma is great at sports, but she's smart enough to keep up with both of them. Bella is a combination of intelligence and skills. No wonder Mom likes them so much." Lannion completed. I blushed with embarrassment until Don's scream sounded.
"Norman!"
Norman turned to Don in complete confusion.
"I challenge your for a game of tag!" Don said angrily. Norman gave him a friendly smile and we all went outside. Norman was unbeatable at tag, but today, I was determined to win.
Ray sat in the usual tree and picked up his book.
"Aren't you going to play today Ray?" I asked hoping to drag him into the game.
He looked at me with his usual serious face and I got the message.
Ray pulled his watch out of his pocket and signaled for us all to run for Norman to start counting.
I had the perfect hiding place. To the forest!𝗣𝗢𝗩 - 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿'𝘀
A few minutes later, Ray signaled for Norman to start the game.
The boy ran off into the woods while Ray returned to his book.
Most of the kids were standing together behind a bush watching Norman closely. A noise sounded through the trees and Nat crouched down, staring at the source of the noise.
Suddenly, Nat felt a light tap on his shoulder and was more than surprised when he saw Norman behind him. The children jumped in fright and Norman let out a satisfied giggle.
In another area of the forest, Don and Conny were hiding together.
"Come get me Norman! I'll make you eat dust!" He yelled with determination.
"Thanks for helping me with tag, Don." Conny smiled happily.
"You don't need thank me. I will always help you!" He smiled at the little one, who gave another one of her smiles. Conny laughed and politely asked Don to lower his voice.
Don turned and was surprised to see footprints that looked like they belonged to Norman.
"Norman, you careless—" Don began, but was interrupted by Conny's giggle. Turning back, Don almost fell over in shock at the sight of Norman's fond smile.
"Don, you are very careless." He chuckled as he walked closer to Don. "Remember what I said? You are too impulsive and lose your temper easily."
Norman gave Conny a wave and took off running.
Meanwhile, in front of Grace Field house, all the kids were there, already found by Norman, waiting for the game to end. All except two.
"It's not possible! He caught almost everyone!" Don complained.
"It's Norman." Nat laughed.
"The only ones left are Emma and Bella." Anna said.
"Emma will be found soon and Bella...well, you know how long Norman takes with her." Gilda smirked.
Ray checked his pocket watch again. There was still time for the game to end.
Back in the forest, Emma strategically hid behind a tree. Hearing noises among the plants, the girl crouched down to the bush. When Emma rose in shock at seeing nothing, she felt Norman tap her shoulder.
"AH!" Emma squealed in alarm as Norman laughed. "Is not fair!! I never win, you always find me!"
"One day you'll win, Emma." Norman smiled fondly.
"Is anyone else missing?" Emma asked.
"Bella." Norman laughed in amusement. The boy ran away determined to find Bella before the game was over.
"This two." Emma laughed with her hands on her hips.—END OF CHAPTER 1–
