I wrote this story just under 2 years ago and there were so many little mistakes that I didn't like about it, so I thought that I would rewrite it. I hope you like the story and I will try and write it the best I possibly can! Also TW: there will be a lot of abusive talk and neglect etc in this book so read at your own risk.

Darkness. That's was Sirius woke up to that morning. It was early, before the sun had risen on a cold winters morning and Sirius was tucked away in his four postered bed in the boys dormitory. Unlike the other boys, he was wide awake, struggling to turn off his mind to get a single second of peace. His thoughts were racing, much like a raging river, they seemed never ending. They just kept hopping to one another as though it was their soul purpose to be irritating and antagonising. He wanted to just focus on one thing, trying to just listen to the soft sounds coming from the other boys, hoping that they would calm his nerves, but he's not sure anything can stop it until he lays his eyes on them again.

He had enough, he couldn't just lay here and let his mind lead him away on unlikely tangents. So he got up, slowly to make sure he wouldn't make too much noise that would wake the sleeping bodies in the room, and slipped on a thick jumper, to head down to the common room in. He slowly opened the door, knowing the right speed to make it squeak the least, and slid through, shutting it behind him with a slight click. He walked down the stone steps, grateful that he's wearing woollen socks as the stone is no doubt freezing.

As he reached the final step, he realised that the room was not empty as he spotted the roaring fire in the centre. His eyes glued to the bright red hair on the leather sofa directly opposite to the vivid orange flames. He took a step in, he didn't want to disturb her but the fire was radiating so much warmth, it was like it was compelling him to walk towards it. He glided across the room, settling on an arm chair that was closest to the heat, as he could already feel the cold nipping at his face. They sat in silence, Sirius didn't even know if she knew it was him sat there as her eyes had not left the fire yet. It made him think that it was not just him that felt a compulsion emitting from it, but then her eyes travelled until they met his. Her emerald green eyes locking to his icy blue and it was as though an understanding was communicated instinctively.

Of course it did. They were the only ones that truly understood each other when it came to things like this. Baffling to most people, Sirius Black and Lily Evans actually understanding each other on something. The two opposites: the loyal pureblood always backing up the first proper friend he had ever made, the first person who could look past his last name, his family and just see him for who he truly was and the fiery muggleborn who always stood up for herself, never backing down from a fight if it involves the people she loves. In many eyes, they were completely different but when you looked past the barriers, the protective walls the two held, they were truly alike. Both loyal to those around them, quick to bite back at people, never feeling truly excepted within familial life and found true peace and a home at Hogwarts. So they rivalled each other, stayed away in public sight, acted as though they were disgusted by the thought of each other when they were intimidated by the similarities and pull the two had. A need for friendship when neither actually wanted it, but when the time came, when they needed someone for a reason no one else could understand; they would push past the forged hatred.

A soft smile consumed her face, not a smile that could show Sirius she was truly happy but enough to show she wasn't falling to pieces. He reciprocated it, projecting that he was feeling the exact same by one simple action. Her voice travelled across the room in a smooth manner, "Couldn't sleep."
It wasn't a question but neither a statement, it was like it was their own understanding in the middle. It was both, she couldn't sleep, the same as him.
He knows it doesn't need to be answered but still shakes his head, whispering "nope,"popping the 'p' to try and lighten the mood in anyway he can.

Suddenly, movement could be heard from the stairs to the boy's dormitories. Feet scattering on the stone steps creating a rhythmic tapping sound as they travelled closer. Then, a swarm of first and second year boys collapsed into the common room yelling and squealing so quickly that lily and Sirius couldn't pick up on a thing that they were saying. Not long after the same could be heard from the step to the girls, and in similar fashion to the boys, the first and second year girls scattered into the common room. This time lily could pick the words out.

"Snow," she stated, then let out and airy giggle as she saw Sirius face turn to look confused,
"They don't get to see it much in England, it normally melts before it reaches the ground."

He changed his face to fake understanding, not realising why they wouldn't just go somewhere with snow, but didn't say anything. He understood that there were more muggleborn students than ever because of the constant threats of war in the wizarding world, but they had those 'airpaines' didn't they. He couldn't really remember that much, not wanting to pay that much attention in muggle studies about flying muggles because wizards started centuries before, these muggles really need to start catching up.

It seemed as though the whole tower was awake now and we're all slowly congregating in the common room.
Marlene had soon come down and snuggled onto the sofa next to lily, making small talk with the two of them. Sirius had become quite fond of her, as her and her family had attended many balls thrown by purebloods, that he had attended. It was nice to have someone who he knew, that he could hide with to stop the constant marriage proposals from needy mothers trying to get their daughters with the 'heir of the noble and most ancient house of black'.

The blacks were seen to be some sort of hierarchy when it came to the wizarding world and purebloods, but Sirius could not understand why anybody would ever want to be that or in this family; it had already caused him too many problems and he was barely sixteen. Honestly, he just wanted a simple life away from this all, but that could never happen.

A heavy weight colliding on top of him pulled him out of his thoughts. The signature laugh made him recognise what it was immediately. James potter, Sirius' best friend, one of the only people Sirius knows he will forever love, his soulmate, his other half. The one person that can read him like a book, well mostly, he's the person that knows the most about Sirius, but not everything, merlin not everything, but almost.

"Pads, baby, I missed you so much, you left me in bed all by myself and I was getting cold without you tucked by my side," James all but screamed then placed a wet kiss to Sirius' cheek. He was unable to keep his laughter in when he saw the disgust that rose on Sirius face. It was unimaginable, making even the girls giggle.

"I'm sorry, honey," he replied drawing his sarcastic tone out dramatically, "I couldn't take much more of your snoring. It was like we had a bear in the room, prongs."

James faked hurt, gasping, clutching his imaginary pearls, "How dare you do this to me?, my one true love. I can't breathe, oh merlin, I can't breathe." James rolled off of Sirius' lap, smacking the floor theatrically. "You betrayed me, how can I ever forgive you? I'm done!" Sirius couldn't keep his laughter in. He could always count on James to regenerate the unenergetic mood. Always being the light in the darkest depths of the shadows. That is James Potter for everyone.

That's where they stayed for a while, for Sirius it felt like years, just being able to stay there feeling content, staying with people that he felt safe with. Just laughing and being able to act their age, for once in his life he got to act his age.

ok, ok so I started writing this again. um I think I may add romance but idk, please leave any feedback if you want. I'm always up for it. Thanks so much :)
