I had never been late to school in my life. Not even when the road was shut down and my mom couldn't drive me the rest of the way. I had instead jumped out, and ran in the torrential rain to ensure I made it there on time. That is why I carry spare clothes in my now waterproof bag. It is just practical that way. I also made it on time only to find out school was closed that day because of all the snow. I had found out just after arriving because I decided to leave early that day.

But today was no excuse. I had planned my route prior to starting my first day, and I had ran the course on foot and by car to maximise efficiency. I knew how long it would take me down to the millisecond, and yet, somehow, I managed to be late. Well, I actually knew why I was late, and it was all because of one boy.

I suppose it would be wrong of me to blame him as well, considering his friends were far more rude than him. But, if he hadn't had his arm out when he did, I would have never been swooped up and into their golf cart, and I would have never been taken so far out of the way of school that the trek back would take forever. I did run, though. I am not athletic in the slightest, but I know when to move, and my first day in a public school certainly was the time to move.

I made it only a few minutes behind schedule, and thankfully was not the last one to the meeting place in front of the school. That honor, as always, would most likely go to Pinkie, my affectionate-but-wild friend. She was my exact opposite in a sense, but I still loved her with all my heart. Her and the rest of my friends. That I now get to go to school with. Just thinking that made me giddy, and it showed, because as soon as I walked up, Applejack let me know it was the biggest smile she had ever seen on my face. Rarity immediately began fretting over my hair, which had gotten knotted and frayed with all the excitement of the morning.

I realize now that none of our names sound normal. We do have normal names, myself included. I was born as Susan, but after years together, we all had created fun nicknames for each other that stuck. I haven't been called Susan in a long time, but rather as Twilight Sparkle due to my obsession with the vampire romance novels when I was younger. Pinkie got her name from her love of all things pink, Rarity due to her tastes in fashion, and Applejack is a play on her real name, Jackie, and her family's apple orchard. We have two others that complete the group, a quiet birdwatcher named Fluttershy, and a loud, star athlete named Rainbow Dash that has had her hair in many colors since we were ten.

"Did you use the shampoo I gave you?" Rarity asked me as she brushed out my hair. "Yes?" I replied, unsure if I actually did. "Well clearly you didn't, the color is already growing dull," She replied. As a celebration of leaving private school, I let my friends dye my hair. We chose a purple that was not too different from my dark brown hair, but at the suggestion of Pinkie and Rainbow, we added two stripes of bright color, one blue and another pink. I don't mind it, I have never really cared for my appearance one way or another, but I had a lot of fun spending the night with my friends. By this point, Rainbow and Fluttershy had arrived, and we mindlessly talked amongst ourselves until Pinkie came crashing in with a hug for me. "Twilight! Oh my god we are all together now! This year is going to be awesome!" I laughed with her, and we all went inside together, Rainbow's arm around my shoulder and Pinkie linking arms with me on the other side.

As a group, we stood out with the bright colors and dynamic personalities. Not much attention was paid towards us, however, as everyone had their own groups they scattered off to. I was still in awe at how large this new school was. My old building had only one floor, and fit all grades without an issue. Here, it was only high school students, and there were multiple floors with hallways dedicated to different subjects. I knew I wouldn't get lost, that was hardly an issue since I knew the school by heart already, and I had a class with each of my friends, but theory was always different from practice, so I needed to be ready. And ready I was.

The day was fast paced and I was always moving from class to class. By lunch, the excitement had worn off and I was ready to focus on my studies. "Twi, you just started school here, why are you reading your English textbook?" Applejack asked as she sat down with her tray. "Yeah Twilight, you're already ahead of all of us because of your old school, just sit back and enjoy high school," Pinkie added. I finally looked up to respond, but I noticed a member of our group was missing. "Where is Rainbow?" I asked. "She is practicing with her tennis team," Fluttershy mumbled. "I looked back at Pinkie. "So what I am hearing is that Rainbow is working hard on her sport commitment instead of enjoying high school? What is the difference between her sport and my studies?" I asked. Pinkie's eternal smile faded slightly. "I was just saying, you don't need to be working so hard all the time," She replied. "Have you eaten lunch yet, Darling?" Rarity asked, attempting to turn the conversation. Applejack jumped onto it. "Yeah, if not I'll go to the line with you. You gotta be smart about what to eat, otherwise you'll be getting something real gross," Applejack recommended. But, by that point, I wasn't able to move into the talk of fruits and sandwiches.

I stood up, which silenced everyone immediately. "I am just going to go to my next class now," I said, collecting my things and pushing in my chair. "Do you need one of us to go with you? It is the only class you have alone." Applejack stood. "No, no. I will be fine. It was near our physics class, so I'll get there without issue," I replied, turning and leaving before they could follow.

I wandered the mostly empty halls in shame. I didn't want a fight with my friends, especially on a day like today, but they know how important my education is to me. I have fun making flashcards and reading, just as Pinkie lives for her parties, and Rarity spends all her time watching Project Runway. Why is my idea of fun something to be discouraged. I was only growing more upset, tears beginning to form as I finally located my next class. I walked in and wiped my eyes, trying to remain optimistic. It was my favorite subject, so there had to be some kind of hope for the day to end better than this.

Astrology, the stars and constellations. The walls were covered in posters of different ones, and my eyes were caught on a beautiful photo of my favorite one; Crater. It listed some information next to it, and I began to wander over to see a closer look. A cough to my right, however, made me jump. I looked for the source, and the boy from this morning was seated there.
