Chapter One

Courtney Adams. She was my friend, but I hated her. I hated her so much. We met in sixth grade when I invited her into my little clique. I'm not sure why I even did it to be honest. I guess, like everyone else, I was caught under her spell.
Every detail of Courtney was beautiful and mysterious. She spoke like a poet, and walked like an artist. She was like a walking mystery, and like any good mystery everyone who caught a glimpse of it was instantly hooked.
I never envied Courtney, I was still Blair Cook. I was still the pretty, desirable one. If anything I was proud, Courtney was mine. I'd discovered her, I got to take credit for her.
I'm not sure where exactly things went wrong with us. All I know is that right now I'm sitting in the passenger seat of my boyfriend Hayes's car, and we're starring at Courtney Adams's house. Waiting for her parents to leave. Leave so we can go inside the house, and do what needs to be done.
"Alright, no one's left yet, just wait out back and keep quiet."
Hayes hangs up the phone and looks at me.
"Hamilton?" I ask. Inquiring about Courtney's ex.
"He's out back." Hayes sighs, and looks straight out the wind shield, into Courtney's house.
"It's the only thing to do. She can't get away with it, and this is the only way to stop her," I stare at him we can't turn back now.
"I know," he looks at me and takes my hand. Every time Hayes looks at me my stomach gets butterflies, and I seem to melt right into him. He's always there for me, no matter what. I turn away from him and look at the car. The details seem to stand out more now then ever. I feel more alive then I ever have, more alert. I can feel adrenaline rushing through me. Moving me forward.
But somehow, I feel more calm then ever too. I trace my hand along car door thinking about how after tonight everything will be ok again.
"We're moving," Hayes whispers. I look up and see Mr. and Mrs. Adams leaving the house and getting into the car, dressed in their finest.
Hayes breathes deeply and pulls the car into reverse, slowly backing into the Adams's lower drive way. I pick up my phone and send a message to Hamilton.

"All is good"
Two seconds later he replies.
"Same here"
"Hamilton's ready," I whisper to Hayes.
He looks at me again, I can feel my heart racing, and I know his is going just as fast as mine. He takes my hand again and looks deep into my eyes, deeper then he ever has.

"Tonight won't change anything. It will only fix things."
I feel him moving closer to me, simultaneously my eyes flutter shut and his hands move through my hair.
We've kissed before, but this time there's something more to it. Desperation. As if we're trying to fit all the kisses we will ever have into a few seconds. Just in case.
He pulls away first and looks at me.
"I love you," I whisper, "that's why we need to do this."
"I love your too," he whispers back.
Then I pull open the car door, my eyes fixed on the house as I calmly begin to walk towards Courtney Adams's death.
