No one would tell Avery who saved her. No one would tell her anything. Why was that?
Her left leg throbbed. Was she going to go through surgery? She didn't remember...anything but seeing a boy's face moving away from hers on the sand when she regained her breath. When she came back to life.
Who was the boy that saved her? When was she going to be discharged from the hospital? Why wouldn't anyone tell her what was going on? Her mind was fuzzy with questions.
"Oh good, you're awake." Her mother walked in, in a grey jumpsuit, earpiece in, raven hair up in an elegant updo, black high heels clanking against the tile floor. "Cheryl I have to go now, my daughter's awake. Yes, I will tell her that. Bye-bye."
Avery looked over at her mother. Who was Cheryl? Of course, even with Avery in the hospital awaiting surgery, her mother was still working. She couldn't take a day off for anything, including her wedding.
"Mom, what's going on?"
"Oh honey, the doctors are getting ready for your surgery. That evil creature took a nasty bite of your leg, but don't worry, in no time your leg will be as good as new. Oh, and Cheryl says good luck on the surgery!"
Was her leg really that bad? "When's the surgery?"
"In two hours."
Two hours. "How did you know I'd be awake?"
"Oh, I would have had the nurses wake you, darling. This surgery is important to both of us."
"Is Dad here? Will he wish me good luck?"
"Oh darling, he couldn't make it. Something about a fishing trip with one of his buddies. So sorry."
Avery's heart deflated. Her father had missed so much of her life in the last year and now she was going to have this surgery, something she might not survive, and he was off fishing.
"Oh."
The next morning, Avery had gone for a long run, to clear her head. Her father had already left for work that day and she didn't have to go into Ollie's until four. She finally had to slow down when her left leg started to cramp up.
She was five miles away from 'The Fitness Zone'. Maybe there was a class going on that she could join...
But what if Ambrose was working?
She didn't want to see him.
She wanted nothing to do with him.
She should turn back. Her leg couldn't take any more exercise right now anyway and she shouldn't push it.
"Avery?"
Avery looked to her right and saw Tamar walking toward her. Shit. She'd been avoiding her and Serena since the Fourth. She couldn't turn around and walk the other way since she was already spotted but what else was there besides explaining why she left?
She didn't want to tell Tamar about her accident three years ago. She didn't want to tell anyone about it.
Tamar was too close now to turn around.
"Oh, Tamar. I didn't expect to see you today." Probably not the right thing to say in a small town.
She scrunched her brows together. "We live five miles away from each other, Avery. Kind of hard not to run into each other unless you stay in the house all day."
Probably what she should have done.
"What are you up to?"
Trying to clear my head, Avery thought. But it wasn't working. "I'm not sure yet," she answered.
