ROSEMARY

Camila’s car stopped in front of the Emergency Room doors and I shot out of the passenger seat as soon as I could get unbuckled. The only two things on my mind: finding out how Mercy is, finding out how Tate is. My heart couldn’t handle the thought of either of them being in danger. Those two were my everything. I ran straight for the nurse’s station, an older lady with white hair greeted me.

“Who are you looking for tonight, Miss?”

“Mercy Roland and Tate Wilkins. They were brought here after a car accident. Mercy, she’s my little sister. She’s only sixteen. Please, please tell me they’re okay.”

“Why don’t you take a seat over there and I’ll page their doctors to let them know you’re here.”

“I don’t think you understand, Mercy is my little sister. I’m her guardian. I need to see her right now, I need to know she’s okay.”

“I understand, Miss, but we have a protocol to follow and I cannot just let you pack into the emergency room right now. If you’ll take a seat…” she motioned towards the chairs again, but I slammed my hands down on the desk.

“I NEED to see them!” My knees buckle and I almost fall to the ground, but I feel a pair of arms wrap around my waist and hold me up.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

“Jetson?” I say through my sobbing.

“That’s right, Rosemary. Let’s go wait over at these chairs and I’m sure they’ll get us all the information we need as soon as they can.”

“But I need them. I need Mercy to be okay. I need Tate to be...Georgia said...Jetson…”

He cradles me against his chest, I feel another hand rest gently on my back, “Rosemary, honey, we’re here, okay?”

Georgia and Jetson were right there to catch me as I fell. They would never be my parents, but they certainly were the kind of people you wanted in your corner. The two of them guided me over the waiting room where my knees almost buckled again. I figured Camila would stick around, but I didn’t expect to see the entire family sitting in the waiting room. I guess it makes sense, Tate being their brother and all, but I wasn’t alone, I didn’t have to wait by myself and that was comforting.

“Do you want something to drink, Rosemary? I can go grab some coffees.”

I shook my head at Maverick’s question but appreciated the gesture. He sat back down next to his wife who was holding their sleepy daughter in her arms. Even Landry and Jasper were here with Beckett. I knew she was probably so uncomfortable sitting here, she just spent the entire day talking about how ready to was for their new baby.

I sat down next to Georgia and she squeezed my hand tightly. Her eyes were red and puffy, much like mine, “I talked to her on the phone, Rosemary. She sounded fine.”

“I know that’s what you said, but a lot can happen, you know? What if she hit her head and no she’s back there with a brain bleed or something?”

“Thinking that way is going to drive you crazy, Rosemary.”

“I know, but my entire life is behind those doors, Georgia,” I wipe the tears away with the back of my hand.

She gently pats my other hand and swallows back her own tears. “I know, sweetie. I know.”

Of course, she knew. I felt so selfish sitting here going on and on about my worries when her son was back there somewhere as well. Camila and I were just leaving dinner when I got the panicked phone call from Georgia. She received a call from a number she didn’t know, but went ahead and answered anyway. It was a man saying he had witnessed an accident involving Tate, Mercy, and a semi-truck. He gave the phone to Mercy and she just told Georgia that she was fine, but Tate was hurt badly.
