8: On the Run
Midnight’s eyes flew open as the clock struck twelve. It was time to leave. He quietly got up and walked over to the table. Cassie had started a grocery list earlier, and the pen and pad of paper was still lying there.
“I’m not good at goodbyes, so I’ll make this short. Thank you all for what you’ve done for me. I would have stayed if I could. I enjoyed my stay, even if I might not have seemed like it.
Farewell,
Midnight”
Midnight paused for a minute, and then quietly walked out of the house. Once out of hearing range, he pulled out his phone and dialed Flame’s number.
“Hello?” Flame’s voice answered the call.
“Hi Flame,” Midnight replied.
“Midnight, tell me you are okay, they left my car, so I just patched the tires, but they took your mustang, where have you been?” Flame paused to take a breath.
“Easy Flame, I’m okay. I’m glad we only have one car to get back. I am in a small town seventy miles north of Sante. Where are you?”
“I’m in Sante. I’ve got Jay with me, he hacked into the police system for me, but we couldn’t find you anywhere, other than that you had been caught.”
“Well, since you got Jay with you, which saved us the trouble of finding him to hack into the systems to find my car.”
“Already done, Mid,” Flame replied proudly, “Your car is in lockdown in Sante.”
“Great! Could you come pick me up? I don’t want to walk the seventy miles.”
“Alright, I’ll be headed your way in just a second. You see the button on the top of your phone?”
“Yeah, I see it.”
“It’s a tracker. Push it so I can track you.”
“You sure the cops won’t pick it up?”
“No, but it’s better than getting lost, isn’t it?”
“I guess so,” Midnight said, pushing the button.
“I see the red dot on my GPS, Midnight,” Flame’s car was making a loud beeping sound.
“You still got that blasted GPS?”
“Yeah, it’s come in handy,” Flame snickered, “Though I don’t make a point of trusting that the road it says is there is really truly there.”
“I ditched it after it led me to the edge of a cliff into a lake and said to continue straight.”
Flame laughed, and then replied, “Well, I’ll see you in a few minutes.”
“Okay, drive safe, and don’t be slow. Adios, amigo, see you soon.” Midnight hung up and slid the phone back into his pocket.
Midnight walked to the edge of town and started the walk to meet Flame on the road. He stopped as a shiver ran up his spine. Someone, or something, was following him. He turned to look back at the town, and saw a figure walking towards him. He started to turn back around towards Sante and take off running when the figure spoke.
“Midnight, it’s me, Jania,” Jania’s voice sounded like she had been crying.
Midnight walked to meet her, “What are you doing out here this late?”
“I followed you out of the house. I came to say goodbye.”
“You read the note I left?”
“No, I didn’t know you left a note.”
