I trudge through the crisp snow, dragging my feet and listening to the sound of my heart beat. It had been a long day at work. Quitting wasn't exactly on my agenda. Being yelled at constantly isn't exactly pleasant but neither is being thrown up on. I hated working in that stupid kitchen but I needed the money for fuel and groceries. Not to mention for school. My mother was in no condition to be working. I lift my gaze up from the snow, locking my eyes on the dark figure standing across the road. He was leaning against a light post that flickered, lighting his features slightly. His hair fell over his eyes leaving his mouth pulled into a smirk. He stands up straight and flicks the hair out of his eyes. I walk backward a couple of steps, my eyes never leaving the guy. My feet stumble as I sprint down the path slipping on the snow. All I could hear was the sound of my shaking breaths and my heartbeat. My eyes were flooding with tears from the cold air. My legs ache and my lungs burn but nothing compared to what came next.
I open my eyes wishing I hadn't. Pain blossoms through my left arm. I try to move my head but my body refuses. I just studied the ceiling, noticing its unfamiliar pattern. I shift my body so I could get a better view to see where I am. My vision swims for a moment until it finally settles. I fix my eyes on the man sitting on a black leather couch. He is watching the TV. I study his face watching as the colours from the TV bounce of his face making him look a little frightening... or maybe frightened. Whichever it was I couldn't stay here. I begin thinking of ways to escape without the guy noticing be a male voice cuts through my thoughts.
"Um... Hi" he says awkwardly. I push all the thoughts out of my mind and watch him. His eyes were a sharp, icy blue piercing straight through me. I find myself tracing the shape of his body with my eyes realising that he had no shirt on.
"Uh, hello? Earth to whoever you are," he says waving his hand in my face. I just stare at him blankly. "Well, ah my name is Chase," He holds his hand out for me to shake. I just give him a small nod. "What? You don't speak?"
"Of course I speak," I say sharply. "Where am I? Who are you?"
"Well I already told you my name is Chase and we are in my apartment. Ah I never caught your name," he says.
"Erica. What happened? Why am I here?" I ask.
"Well you kind of, might have, accidently injured the most powerful Fury," he says, baiting his lip and staring at the floor.
"What is a Fury?" I say feeling like this is an interrogation.
"A Fury is a creature from the Blaze World. He rules over everyone. If you get in his way, he will eliminate you," he replies coldly.
Oh. My. Gosh. I hurt the Fury! I'm going to die!
"Um, okay. So what exactly did I do to this Fury guy? Also what does he look like? It would be nice to know so I can watch out for him," I say quickly.
"Well first of all, when you were running from me you bumped into him. Then you might have maybe pushed him in front of a car. You don't need to worry about him. You have to worry about his assassins," he replies calmly as if he deals with this every day.
"What, do you deal with people running from the Fury every day?" I say sarcastically.
"Actually, I'm one of them," he replies. I open my mouth to speak but think better of it. "We'd better get going," he says.
"Where are we going?" I asked curiously, picking at the hem of my tattered old hoodie.
"The Blaze World, where else?"
"But what about my family? They need me." He grabs my hands and closes his eyes. I feel a powerful force rush through my body as my feet lift off the ground. A breeze swirls around my body, send slight burning sensations up my arms. As my body slowly descends from the air I feel pressure fall upon my feet. Chase is trying to hide a smirk behind his hand. I crane my neck backward so I can see what he has done. There are two lush white angel wings sprouting from my shoulder blades. "There. I erased you from your past life. No one will remember you and your family will win the lottery or something. Dont worry the same thing happened to Lauren.Except for the fact she didn't push the Fury in front of a truck," I glance around and see a huge fountain in the middle of the park. I glance back at Chase and lean forward to punch him. Hard. He grabs his arm and starts laughing and giggling. I take off toward the fountain. I stumble over my feet to get to it. Once I reach the fountain, I watch my reflection as the girl stares back at me. I look at the girl in the reflection. She is not the Erica Knight I once knew. Judging by the halo hovering above my head, Chase had turned me into an angel. What an asshole! I smack at the water sending ripples throughout the fountain.
I run my shaking hand through my long blonde hair as it now gently falls over my shoulder. I turn away to see a young girl staring up at me. She can't be more than eight years old. I look over to Chase who is still cackling away. I don't want to startle the girl so I bend down on one knee and lean in to the little girl. "Hi. My name is Erica. What's yours?" I say sweetly. She brushes a lock of brown hair of her delicate cheeks.
"Skyler," she replies softly leaning in to say something else. "I am scared of the dark," she whispers so softly I can barely hear it.
"Don't worry I'll watch over you," I whisper. She comes closer and throws her arms around my neck and her breath brushes against my jaw line. I hear someone calling Skyler. She whips her head around and looks in the direction the voice came from. She plants a small kiss on my cheek and runs off in that direction. I smile as her little ponytail swishes around behind her as she runs.
