How Does It Feel?

How does it feel,
Just between you and I.
How does it feel
To watch your true love die?

We each have our own path
That we cut out in this world.
We cut and cut away,
While we're still just boys and girls.

We go through our days
Hoping to find
True love's kiss
As we've heard it's divine.

Then we find it one day
After all of our searching.
We may have failed a few times,
But we got over the hurting.

So, we hold on tight
To the one that we love
And thank God for the gift
We know is from above.

When we're with them,
We walk a little prouder,
We talk more softly,
And we laugh even louder.

We give them our heart
And throw away the key,
Because we know when we're with them
We're who we're meant to be.

So, we make our plans
For the life left ahead.
We kiss their forehead
And say what's needs to be said.

One day soon after
There's a bend in his knee,
And she sheds a few tears
When he presents her the ring.

Wedding plans
They're thought up immediately.
She picks out her dress
And he follows obediently.

Once the big day comes
She doesn't feel like a queen,
But to him,
She's the sweetest thing that he ever has seen.

As he stands at the alter,
Surrounded by silent cries,
He can't help but think
He's just a man, with tears in his eyes.

Now that we're holding each other,
The world fades to grey.
Then we say our "I Do's"
And kiss our stage-fright away.

The years go by
And suddenly we have children.
We love them so much
But never as much as the love they were built with.

We watch them grow up
And sometimes protect them,
Even after they've left
To find their own gem.

Then we sit hand in hand,
As the time passes,
Flipping through our photo albums
Looking down through our glasses.

When we're lucky
We get visits from grandkids.
We laugh and We spoil them
Because that's for their parents to deal with.

We watch them grow older
And act like they know things.
But, we know because we've been there
So, we know what life brings.

We're older now,
Much older than we feel,
And even though we think we can
Our bodies just can't deal.

Then one day
Our love has a stroke,
A heart attack,
Or maybe just choked.

Now the person that we love
Is just lying there dwindling,
And we beg them to get better
Because our heart needs rekindling.

We watch them try.
They try everyday,
But no amount of effort
Seems to make them okay.

So, our heart keeps breaking
With each breathe that we take,
But there's nothing we can do
To chase away their pain.

Then the day comes,
And we assure them we'll be okay.
We've never lied to them before,
But we know they can't stay.

So, we watch the one that we've loved the most in this world
Slowly fade away,
And we struggle to release their hand
When they head to Heaven's Gates.

We can't do anything about it,
Other than sit and cry,
And when they say it gets better,
We'll ask them the question that let's them know that's a lie.

So:

"How does it feel,
Just between you and I,
How does it feel
To watch your true love die?"
