There I was

Riding alone in the yellow school bus

Just like I did everyday

Since the beginning of 3rd grade

No one wanted to sit next to me

Not in the back

Not even in the middle row of seats

I always had my backpack to the left of me

Taking up the empty space of the window seat

The driver always gave me a sad look

When I set foot in the small opening that they call a door

The teacher's aide tried to make conversation one day

But after no reply was gave

They just turned away and never tried again

Why can't I have friends that ride the bus?

Instead of listening to the bullies in the back

Taking the younger kids lunch money

I accepted the fact that my life was this way

From a very early age

Until one fateful day

A new boy stepped foot in the yellow school bus

I leaned his name was Milo

He was new to the school

He chose to take a chance and sit next to the lonely kid in the front of the bus

We became the best of friends

From day one

He helped me complete the English notes I missed when I was sick

I helped her practice for the National spelling bee

We always played two-person tag at recess

Being the outcasts of third grade

No one wanted to hang out with us

He invited me over to her house for sleepovers every Friday night

He parents even thought of me as the second son they never had

Both of us being only children

Made me form a brotherly protection

We told each other everything

No matter how cold the weather

We always sat together

In the front of the yellow school bus

Until the end of high school

We made a promise at the beginning of middle school

To always stick together

For always and forever

Now it's been a few hours years

We're about to go into the last few months of senior year

He became more popular and known throughout the school
