JESSICA
Jessica is lying on the floor staring at her ceiling, there was something missing in the mural she had painted up there. Among the Mythical creatures some element was missing, but what it was she had no clue. She jumps, startled by her phone's loud ringing. "Hello?"
"Jessica, I need your help, do I look worse in white or mossy green? Oh and should I keep my face plain or overdue on make up?"
Jessica laughs, it was Sophia. Apparently her parents had set her up on yet another date. " Well.... you look good in everything buuut, I guess moss green and definitely overdue on the make up. So how bad is this guy?"
She can hear her friend groan, "He's a lawyer with no personality, I saw him at the winter ball. The dude totally needs a lesson on fun. God, why can't they pick SOMEONE I actually like. OR, better yet, why can't we pick."
Jessica smiles, Sophia always rants about this every time she goes on a date, but society or I should say the rules of our culture can't be changed. " Because society says that our parents and the boy must pick, not the girl and any ways if you keep throwing them away there will barely be anyone left."
She scoffs, " I wish, soo hows the mural coming? Ohh and have your agreed to the weekend trip to Jerusalem, you know we have to know, like, now?!"
Now it's Jessica's turn to groan, sure she wanted a trip out of here, but she would get stuck waiting in a synagogue and morning prayer. She wasn't a person who worshipped she was the person who WAS worshipped. Jessica was one of the last goddesses of the moons and stars. She was trapped in a human body a couple thousand years ago, though Sophia didn't know any of this she just thought Jessica was wiccan. " My parents are just worried, but I can go And I'm totally stuck on the mural, any chance you know something about art?" Both girls bursted out laughing. Sophie was all brains, she only knew where the art hallway was because that's where Jessica was all the time.
After Sophia hung up, Jessica laid back down on her bed, again trying to figure out what was missing. She spent hours trying to figure it out. When she had drawn the layout for it it had seemed complete, but now not so much. The mural represented the spectrum of life in present time, where everything stood in the light, the dark, and the betweens.
As night begun to descend Jessica was getting ready for her rituals. Her normal ritual clothes were laid out along with the traditional jewellery, the white cotton dress hung on her curves and her powerful necklace made out of the secret stone was close to her throat. As she painted her eyes and lips it reminded her of Egypt, her face frowns. She shouldn't dwell on what she can't fix, even though she could if she had all her powers. 'No!' She thought, 'focus I have ceremonies to perform.' And she headed to the tinted '67 impala.
* * *
The night was black and speckled with stars. She could see through the vast acres of trees as she walked the trail. She had to leave her car in the parking lot a ways back, she was on sacred ground, they never brought any kind of technology in these woods. Jessica was almost to the church, this one was her favourite, even though technically she's not supposed to have one. It was her last stop and she always enjoyed it. She loved their church. It was beautiful, just candles and grooves in the soil marking the sacred circle and the natural altar that laid between two white oaks. The people here were pure too, all innocents, none of them beat their children or would kill anyone, their souls were not weighed down by white anger and blinding violence.
As darkness clung to the air she knew it would be a completely wonderful night. Her bare feet could feel the warm earth as she walked down the path, loosely swaying. The wind had a consistent breeze that moved her black hair from her pale face. Her eyes lit up to an intense fiery red as she howled to the creatures of the forest. They howled back singing their songs. The bats flew past her and the other nocturnals as well, came to see the Goddess pass. Jessica nodded her head to them, acknowledging and greeting them as she entered their home.
Jessica had reached the circle, everyone was in their dark cloaks, heads bowed down. She raised her hands and they lifted up their fallen heads. "Greetings, let the circle begin." Jessica walked into the center of the circle, she put her hands to the north, then east, south, and finally west, each time the candles became lit with tall flames. The clear skies flooded with dark clouds except for the moon, which glowed bright upon the circle, the flames blazed brighter, winds gained speed, her people began dancing and chanting. Power coursed through Jessica then she began dancing too, she spoke her ancient words, as she did her stone began glowing darker and darker, each time becoming a darker blue till it almost looked black. She felt a glimpse of what it was like when she used to be a true Goddess.
The power drummed inside her
All too soon the circle was over and the felling of power dwindled, though her amulet still glowed black. The clouds slowly drifted away as the night began to calm. It was over, and there wasn't anything Jessica could do to stop it. She did miss the power because it used to be her essence. She never felt full or herself even when she was in the circle but it was as close as she could could get to.
After everyone had left she lingered in the forest. Being among all the nature had always been a safe place for her, but that's not why she stayed, something was wrong. Something had shifted. her mind was working fast coming up with causes for this sudden shift, though she couldn't jump to conclusion like her overactive imagination wanted her to.
She took a spare vial from her pocket and caught some of the wind. She would examine it once she got home.
