"It's inevitable everything that's good comes to an end"
"I don't want this Princess, but I think we both know it has to happen", he told her, holding her hand as they sat on her bed. It was late at night and her parents were away. They had spent the night out on her balcony, wrapped in a blanket talking, and that had lead to this conversation now.She just nodded, the tears were streaming down her face, "Please talk to me", he pleaded.
"I know Ni, it just hurts. I love you and I'll miss you". He pulled her close lying back on the bed.
"I love you too, more than I can put into words", he kissed her head, "but you're in university and I want you to be able to enjoy it and get your dream job. I've got mine and I want the same for you and we both know neither of us can take much more of this shit".
She nodded against his chest and wrapped her arms tight around his torso. "Baby you have no idea how much it kills me to say this, but if you meet a boy that will take care of you and treat you like the Princess you are, then you take him", the lump in his throat was growing stronger, "I don't want you sitting around in your room for 4 years missing me. You have to enjoy college, go out and have fun with your new friends, and if another boy comes along and he treats you right, then go for it. As long as I know you're happy, then I will be happy".
"Ok", was all she got out.
"But if he gives you shit then you call me ok?", he told her and she giggled, moving over a bit so she could face him better. They stared at eachother for a few seconds before he placed the palm of his left hand on her cheek and gently wiped her tears away with his thumb.
"I love you Princess", he whispered, "and I'm sorry this has to happen, but we know it's for the best". She reached over with her right hand and gave his tears the same treatment.
"Its ok Niall, we'll see eachother again. It'll be different but we'll see eachother again."
It seemed wrong giving the fact that he'd be leaving in a few hours, but he leaned in and kissed her softly. She kissed him back and he gently rolled her onto her back and hovered over her. They just had to have one last night together.
That night was one of the most amazing but most heartbreaking nights of both of their lives. The tears kept rolling down her cheeks. They kept dropping from his eyes to land on her. They wanted to savour every moment they had left together. There wasn't an inch of her soft skin he didn't touch. They took it slow, hoping that somehow, it would never end. But it did.
Their breathing eventually evened out and she fell asleep on his clammy chest. He held her so close, staring at the ceiling, looking all around her room, the room they had spent so much time in over the last 2 or 3 years. He tried to take in everything he saw. Every picture of them and their friends, every teddy bear, every possible thing in her room that would probably seem pointless and meaningless to anybody else, but meant a whole lot to them.
The sound of his alarm at 5 that morning was like a knife in his chest. He had barely slept, just listening to her breathing and looking around the room. She was still asleep and was so peaceful. It killed him to untangle myself from her and leave without waking her. But he knew if he woke her, it would've been ten times harder.
He got dressed and pulled his hoody over his head, leaving his t-shirt beside her with the note he had wrote on the road; more like a song really. He kissed her head and the ring she was wearing. He had bought it with his first pay check from the band.
He covered her up with the duvet. He climbed down her balcony for what would probably be the last time and went back to his parents house to pack for going back on the road.
Leaving her was always hard when they were together, but leaving her this time, not knowing what the future was for them, was the hardest thing he's ever had to do.
"It's impossible to know if after this we can still be friends, yeah"
