I was instantly paralyzed with fear. The fear buckled my knees and made my heart thump. They were there, I could here them. I felt as if I was drowning, pleading with my existence. Oh, what I would give to be sat safely at home right now. Any moment they will have broken in, I could feel the wall shaking from behind me. There was nothing I could do... nothing I could prevent... I just had to give in...
No. The thought came sharp and alert. No, I can't give in. Never mind my own life, I must save Caleb, even if it killed me. I forced my legs to move, one by one. I made my way up the staircase, a new sense of adrenalin had kicked in, making me run even faster. Caleb had to know, I knew that now. I couldn't keep this dark world away from him forever.
I came to his room, and slammed open the door, swiftly running over to his bed.
"Caleb... Caleb, please wake up! Caleb!" I shook him and I shouted his name. He was a heavy sleeper, I had always known that, but I didn't know just how bad it was. Desperation took hold of me as I heard a large smash downstairs. They got in, the words came to me, slowly and morbidly. I pulled Caleb's arm, and swung it over my shoulder. I wasn't particularly strong, but I put all of my strength together and lifted him from the bed. In his sleep, he had become move heavier, and he was already a hugely muscled guy, I barely keep myself upright. Why was he still asleep? I ignored it, I had to try and escape. When I left the room, I had a plan, but this plan was soon shattered.
There, stood at the top of the stair case was one of them. Dead, rotting, and killing. A zombie, ragged clothing and mouldy skin showed that. I retreated back into the room where I bolted the door and stood on the other side, furthest away from it. The good thing about zombies (if you could say good) is that they are slow, and they are incredibly un-intelligent. I looked at Caleb, wondering why all of this wasn't awaking him. I looked at him long and hard. There, I saw it, the blood smeared all over his shirt. I hadn't noticed it before, but now it was as clear as ever. I lifted his shirt to expose a deep wound. I was too late.
It took a few moments to sink in. He was dead... Caleb was dead... Tears fell from my eyes, I was holding him, wishing that I had been quicker. They had got to him, before I came. I had come in the hope that I could save him somehow, protect him from the apocalypse, but they had got here earlier. Right now they were here for me.
And they'll get me, I thought. I didn't care, I loved Caleb more than anything in the world, now I can't think of a world without such love. If I was going to die any time in this apocalypse, it would be now, with the one I loved.
I heard the zombie scraping at the door now. It wouldn't be long before it entered. The scraping and clattering got louder and louder until finally I saw a hoard of zombies all trying to get into the room. I shed one last tear. Goodbye World.
