The person in the story is a cartooist, just a heads up :)
I had just finished adding shading to the last building. The city of Mysteria was complete. Two weeks of nonstop planning and drawing was over. I sat back in my chair and admired my work. Papers were strewn carelessly across the desk, and among them where three day old coffee cups lost in the mess. I sat for a while, looking at the city scape I had just created. The colours of the sunset burst through the gaps between the dark mysterious sky scrapers, the view in front of me was worth the extra time it took making sure every little detail was perfect. I stretched and yawned, it had been a long day, so I took off my glasses, turned out the lights and headed off to bed.
I hit the damp, hard ground with a thud, a cold breeze tickling my neck, leaving a trail of goose bumps in its wake. I lay feeling exposed and alert, trying to gather my thoughts. I opened my eyes slowly. All around me lay a dense swirl of mist, making the air feel heavy and moist, I sat up cautiously and felt the dampness cling to my t-shirt. It took me a few more minutes to get my bearings. I was in the Sunken Echoing. This wasn’t New York anymore….. This was Mysteria. I was in the place of my own creation. The Sunken Echoing is a wide expanse of nothing with great cavernous black holes, which are potentially deadly, depending on which one you fall into. Also there were the whispering wishers to look out for, as the Sunken Echoing is where people’s dreams come to die, the empty dreams become full of hate and vengeance, they are highly persuasive, and can break the toughest souls. If they break your soul, you are forever doomed to be trapped in the Sunken Echoing for eternity, lost in the thoughts of broken dreams.
A sudden chill in the air brought me out of my thoughts. I could hear a faint hissing, and with every second that went by, the sound got louder and the air got colder. The hissing was starting to hurt my ears but every now and again I would catch words or a sentence. I started to shiver as a feeling of sadness and regret washed over me, momentarily drowning out all sound. That’s when I started to hear the screams. I could hear a little girl crying out and the painful screams of a woman, mixed with the sobbing of a man, it echoed in my head, disrupting all my thoughts. It was as if all the pain of these people crying out was inside me. I felt nothing but a sense of despair and deep sorrow. I shivered, trying to clear my head, and wrapped my arms around my knees, curling into a tight ball.
“You could save them you know….” said a hushed whisper near my ear - a bit too close for comfort.
“They don’t have to suffer. You could make their pain go away,” said a different voice to my left.
“All you have to do is follow our voices…. They can lead you to a better place. The City of Mysteria awaits you; a place of joy. Now follow…. follow….” The voice faded as it finished its sentence, and without thinking I got up in search of the voice, aimlessly wandering into the mist.
“That’s right girl…. Follow. Follow. Follow,” whispered the voices.
By now the sound of the voices and the screaming was all I could think of. These feelings led me forwards, urging me to keep walking even though my body ached from the cold.
“Stop,” whispered a voice. “This is where we leave you.”
It felt like a magnet was pulling me forwards - I stood still, confused and alone. The screaming and the voices had stopped; all was silent. As the mist cleared I began to realise where I was. The black hole was all I could see ahead of me. Pulling me in, giving no mercy.
