I wonder why people feel like they have the right to ask me about my personal life. I don't know how many times a day I am asked, "Who are you? Where are you from? What are you mixed with?" My replies to those people are, "Why do you care where I'm...
"I AM More Than My Race: It seems like no one understands that society puts a label on us, but it seems like nobody seems to care or doesn't want to see it for what it is. Is it because everyone's eyes are closed shut? Or will everyone be finding a word to make up an excuse to cover up the truth? Everyone's eyes are closed shut, but ... then, after using the word 'but,' they say things that will cut deep, such as 'you are a mutt.' I was told by someone that I am not 'pure black.' What does that mean? I would love to meet a 'pure black' person. Shall I say more? I am more than my race. Labels do not define me. I was told my 'whiteness' will get me far. Is that right? I cannot tell because all of my life, their definition of 'far' left me a scar. It used to be 'check a box' because you cannot pick both. Biracial is treated as if we are contagious or a deadly host. Now, when a box is presented, it says 'other' why do I have to be an 'other?' What does that mean? Other. Am I an 'other' because I am part of my father and part of my mother? Does it mean I am irrelevant? In my eyes, I am of many and will not run or hide from my intelligence. So why put me in a category? Is it because you do not want me to tell my story? Despite my exotic face, I am human, and I am a part of the human race." -Charlena E. Jackson, Why are You Obsessed with My Race?
