"You mean the scary people in black who go around kidnapping people?" I said, "I thought mom just told me about them to scare me"

"Yes, the gangs usually wear black. But they don't just kidnap people. They were after your mom"

I stared at her "after mom? Why?"

"She owes them money"

"What? How much?"

"I am not sure. But it must be a lot" then the waitress brought her coffee

She took a sip from her coffee and sighed

"13 years ago, I had a sister. Maria, who was your mom's best friend. They had met in California, where your mom and dad used to live. One day, she told me she was going to Australia with her friend, your mom. And that they will be staying with my brother, Cole who lived there." She said with teary eyes

"And then, after a month, I got a call from the police telling me that my sister and brother had a car accident and that they both died." She wiped her tears and continued

"I went there as soon as I could. The police told me that the brakes were cut and that there was a threatening note for your mom in the car. I asked her and then she told me that she owed some gangs money and that she went to Australia to get away from them"

"The police couldn't get the gangs. They didn't even search. They just closed the case and brushed it off as an accident and I couldn't do anything"

We both went silent. I was processing what she just said

She continued, "First, I resented your mother for causing my only family's death. But then I felt bad. She was just alone in the country and pregnant. So I let her stay with me. She didn't want to go back because she didn't want the gangs to know that she was having a baby. She was scared they would kill him too."

"So, I stayed with her until she gave birth. Then we both came to London, to my house. she told me she didn't tell her husband about the baby, We both loved him. But she wanted to give him up."

"So, we left the baby on somebody's porch. and she bought a house near because she couldn't leave him and wanted to watch him grow."

"She didn't tell your father anything that happened. She surprised him with the house and you all started to live there."

"Then I became her lawyer and best friend. And then now, a month ago, she came to me and told me that she couldn't just sit still while her baby was being abused and that she wanted to take him back. I told her that she needs to go to court for that which was dangerous. And then your mom did the stupidest thing." She sighed

"She fabricated a court paper saying she had won the custody of Sebastian. I told her it was stupid, that it was illegal. But she said that the woman wouldn't even check. That she will gladly give her the boy."

"Then after a week, she called me and told me that she lost the paper somewhere, that she didn't need it anyways but for me to give her the copy incase the woman said no. that she had already bought a house to keep the boy and prepared everything"

"And that she was going to Sebastian's house to take him. That was the day she found him dead"

She stopped talking and stared at me, waiting for a response. But my head was spinning and I couldn't say anything. I got up and walked out of the café without a word.

I sat at a bench that was near the café. Then took a deep breath. I felt lost. I have never thought there was any serious problem more than football but now, Sebastian is dead, and it turned out, he was my brother. Mom hid the truth from all of us then said she drove him to suicide and now she is in prison. Then there's Veronica, who was a suspect. And her mom told me this crazy story about mom. And I don't even know if I could trust them. I sighed and closed my eyes.

Paula came and sat beside me. I opened my eyes and stared at her. Waiting for her to tell me that she was just kidding. That what actually happened wasn't that crazy. But instead, she said

"I am so sorry George, I know that I've put problems on your shoulders more than you could carry"

I said nothing. I mean, really, what's there to say? No, it's fine? or  You're right, you just made it more complicated than it was?

After a long silence, I said,

"I can't do it" she looked at me,

"I can't do it alone. I need to tell dad everything"

"You didn't tell him anything? Why?"

"Because I thought that his lawyers will find out everything and tell him. But now, if the paper is fake, there's no way they would know about it. And I am sure that mom didn't tell him anything" I sighed but... "Wait, but veronica didn't say anything about it being fake"

"That's because she didn't know it was. She doesn't really like your mom. She used to tell me that your mom might be the one who killed her aunt and uncle. That's why I didn't tell her about the paper. And I want to keep her thinking that way."

"So...if mom lost the paper, it must have been in our house. Do you think the police might have found it?"

she opened her bag, took out a file, and flipped through pages, the police file I thought where did she get it?

"No George, the police didn't find the paper. All they found was the letters from Sebastian's house and your mom's diary from your house."

"Mom's diary? I didn't know she kept one. What was in there?"

"I am not sure. But I can find that out in like... three days."

"Okay. Call me when you get it and I'll meet you here. And can you bring me any pieces of evidence you have that I can show dad? Whatever it is. I want dad to believe me. Because he won't believe me if I just tell him" the story is too crazy for that

"I can do that. And in case the police didn't see the paper, you need to find it."

"Alright, I'll do that. Thanks, Paula"

Then I went home. I searched the entire house for it but the paper wasn't anywhere, the police had turned the house upside down and didn't find it. There's no way they wouldn't have seen it if it was here. So where is it?

When dad came home, he looked tired. So, I didn't want to bother him. I went to my room and slept.

My phone buzzed and woke me up in the middle of the night. It was an unknown number

"Hello?" I said, my eyes still closed

"Hey George" Veronica said

"Sorry, wrong number" I hung up

Then she called again. I tried to ignore it but the phone buzzed once more

"Would you stop calling me?"

"No"

"What do you want?"

"I want you to open your window"

"What?"
