"Dad.."

Even though they weren't making eye contact, the fact that she was right in front of his car and the fact that she knew she was being watched from the backseat made her tremble. Every time her father was mentioned, her breath caught in her throat.

Weren't parents supposed to be forgiving and supportive? So why hadn't hers forgiven her? Why did she feel so alone? Why couldn't she hear her parents say she was their sweet little girl anymore? Why couldn't they forgive her mistake?

She took a few steps forward, barely conscious, without taking her eyes off the backseat's window. While one step followed the other, she barely made it past the car, tripping a few times. Before she could even step up on the sidewalk, the car had already sped off the moment she got out of its way.

"Why? Why can't you just forgive me, dad?"

"Aphmau." She heard a soft voice gently say her name and turned around at the sound. "Good morning."

Aphmau kept looking back and forth between her friend and the road that her father's car had driven off from. She sniffed and ran her hand through her hair. She was trying extremely hard not to slip up so that her friend wouldn't catch onto the fact that she was upset. She gave a half smile, that being the best she could do.

But since the woman who was her one of her closest friends could tell she was upset even from a glance, she saw that Aphmau was only pretending. Not wanting to stress her out, Lucinda smiled back pretending that she hadn't seen what had just happened. "You're early today?"

"Yeah." Aphmau answered her friend's question not giving any context whatsoever, trying to let her onto the fact that she wasn't in the mood to talk. She heard Lucinda complain while following behind her but she didn't pay any mind to it. "Alright, avoid me. But how long are you going to keep doing this?"

What did Lucinda expect her to say? What good was it to repeat the words 'I ran away from home and now I feel like I don't belong anywhere' every single time? What did questioning it do for Lucinda? There was no point.

"Good morning, ladies!" Hearing the voice of another one of her friends, Aphmau peeked behind her from her shoulder to see Travis smiling at her and Lucinda.

"Morning."

Lucinda and Travis were two of the people she could always rely on no matter what.

When she entered the building without waiting up for her friends, she overheard Travis ask "Is Aphmau upset?" to Lucinda. She didn't turn around or stop walking. She waved hello to the security guards and the girls at the reception and headed over to the elevators.

The old Aphmau was naive, open hearted and was always careful not to hurt anyone. But she was also determined. She knew what she wanted and wouldn't stop until she got it. She was stubborn. Her head was always held high. She was brave and stood up for everyone. But now, she was so different.

She was still naive, helpful and stubborn to the eye. But she'd gone from the strong, confident and brave girl who would stand up for anyone, especially herself, when needed; to an extremely introverted girl who couldn't do anything but stay silent in the face of violence. She'd been left alone with fears she'd never had to face before and it had changed her.

She got into the elevator and pressed the button for the management department floor and waited for the door to close. She was hoping, praying for the elevator to start going up as soon as possible. But she let out a deep sigh with the arrival of the ginger woman who'd put her hand between the elevator doors to stop them from closing. Travis followed right after.
