Chapter 19: Getaway (Grace's POV)
We walked back into the palace after a drive including multiple pit stops. He let me drive half of the time now that he knew I was a pretty good driver.
When we entered the palace, we were immediately greeted by my parents frowning and Atlas just standing there awkwardly. He was unbothered, I could tell, but our parents probably told him to stand by them just to show that he was on their side.
When I first saw them, I thought they were upset because I didn't come home last night and didn't inform them that I would be staying in Wildfell. I thought they'd be upset and worried that something might have happened to me, but what they said shattered my hopeful illusion pretty quickly.
"What the hell happened? Why didn't you let the James' palace security follow you?"
I scoffed softly to myself, before sighing, "What are you talking about?"
"The James' palace car. They sent one to follow you back, to make sure you got home safely after they found out you ended up staying the night in Wildfell. You ran from them. Why?"
I finally realized that the car which we thought was chasing us was actually tailing us for security. But I didn't fully believe that.
"They didn't inform us that they would be following us back. As far as I saw it, we were being followed by someone who could possibly be a threat to her life. I thought it would be best to lose them," Ronan explained.
"They don't need to tell you anything, Mr. Ronan," Judith spat at him.
"They do, actually. How else would he know that they're not dangerous? He can't take a chance," Atlas shrugged, nodding towards us. Judith glared at him but he ignored her, sending me a reassuring look.
I mouthed 'thank you' before glancing at Ronan. He looked at me, blinking and staying quiet for a minute before he mumbled, "Why don't you freshen up, and then we can talk to your parents about the engagement and getaway?" Getaway? Is that what we're calling it?
I nodded softly before heading up to my room.
He followed me, opening my bedroom door for me. "Are you hungry? I can have someone send food upstairs."
"We just ate on the way, I'm all right, thank you."
He nodded.
"No, thank you, really. For... everything. Especially the saving my life again part, you know."
"That's my job, Princess. Freshen up." He shut the door and I walked to the closet, thinking about everything that happened between yesterday and today.
Is it... normal to be this drawn to your guard? I don't think so. It never happened with Finn, I've never heard of it happening to any other princess, but I'm sure it has happened. There are some very fine, charming bodyguards in this field, and I can guarantee some princesses end up having a one-night stand which they call a mistake but never really regret. But why am I even thinking about this? It's not like I want to sleep with Ronan.
