My Concept of Love

I never understood love between two significant others when I was younger. That concept was screwed by television and popular branded fairytales. The romanticization of a prince appearing out of nowhere to claim you as their rightful partner. A dream that you will wake up to a mythical, yet muscular chest in a thousand count thread sheets. His smile glistens like the sun, and he never ages from the twenty-four year old looking sixteen year old. I prayed that I would see someone in my school hallway and know he would be the one when I would gaze upon his handsome face. From personal experience, please save yourself the embarrassment and don't ever do that!

As I grew older, the concept of love was confused with the concept of lust. Raw passion and desire, an unquenchable flame yearning for another hot body to never leave my side, and to show me pleasure through the night. Some guys rocked my world for one night and I thought they were perfect. They couldn't possibly have had any flaws; after all I barely even knew them. Then I was alone. Sex was great, but there was something missing.

Now I realize that the concept of love is much more than "love at first sight" or sex. There's understanding, care, sacrifice, acceptance, and much more to it. While there is a physical attraction to being in a relationship with someone, there is also an emotional side where the physical side is almost non-existent and all you want to do is be with that person, to see them smile, to walk on a train together, to watch them be their best. When they're gone you miss the interaction, their laugh, the little quirky ways they do things differently than everyone else. Sometimes you don't even need the physical side because they already warmed up your soul.

While reality is viewed differently through everyone's personal perspective, I have seen enough through my eyes to understand my evolution of the concept of love. It can be viewed uniquely, and it can come in many forms. However, when it come a significant other I believe I have a much better understanding than just sex and fairytale princes. I hope you find yours soon.
