They All Remain Stagnant, But Choose to Think Otherwise

"Tell me again why we're letting the short middle schooler join us during training?" Kirishima asked tentatively.

"What the fuck does me being short have to do with anything?" Five snapped.

No one had an answer to that, apparently.

Izuku was a bit nervous himself. Partially for Five, who gave the impression of someone who could go from zero to out-for-blood in less time than it took to regret your life choices, and partially for everyone else, who would end up being on the receiving end of that wrath.

Being the only person who knew anything about Five's quirk, or his circumstances, he wasn't keen on letting the boy— man onto the training grounds, but he supposed that the only person who really knew what Five could handle was Five. Even then, he could tell that the American was distinctly uncomfortable, glaring at a spot on the wall like he'd rather be anywhere else right now.

Izuku can relate, in a sense. They're all outside, standing in the middle of a large, open field, and in all honesty, he still thinks this is a bad idea.

The idea is for the other students to help Five get oriented with his own quirk. Izuku had suggested it when he noticed that the boy was beginning to fidget and shift his stance again and again, like he was trying to suppress a lot of energy. After that point, Izuku thought about it for a while, and once they had a moment alone, he suggested that they come up with a cover story as to why Five was injured and why he had to stay at UA, since it was honestly a huge miracle that no one had bothered to ask about that yet.

Five had been able to formulate a series of lies in two seconds, and Izuku went back to inform Aizawa.

He told Aizawa that Five was from a small orphanage in the countryside, and that his siblings were what he called his fellow orphans. Five and his siblings ran away from the orphanage together, and since then, they've been on the run. For a while now, he has been having trouble activating his quirk. He used to be a natural with it, but he messed up a jump at some point and started having trouble controlling it.

One day, he got separated from his siblings after warping without meaning to. He kept trying to go back to them, but it was to no avail, and since warp quirks are incredibly rare, he had no one to turn to. He spent months searching for them, getting involved with some shady people in the process, but one day, he messed up his jump again, and he ended up injuring himself in the process when he teleported right into a dumpster. Five believes he can relearn control over his power, but he'll need to test it out first.

The whole story was convoluted and had plenty of holes in it, but Five had deemed that it wasn't safe to tell anyone, not even the pros, the truth about him.

"Why did you tell me, then?" Izuku had asked him curiously.

Five had just stared at him for several long, strained minutes of silence, like he wasn't keen on answering any time soon.

Well, he did answer, but his exact words were "I had to because of one of the laws of the universe stating that I do whatever the hell I want."

For now though, Five was just meant to watch and observe, which was good, since Izuku couldn't be sure if he would or wouldn't snap someone's neck if they tried to grab him from behind. It may have just been delaying the inevitable, but nonetheless, Izuku wanted to prepare himself for when that would happen.

Everyone was supposed to be sparring with their quirks one by one. The fight would last about six minutes, and would go tournament style. Aside from basic rules like "don't murder each other", the whole thing was free reign, since the main point of this training session was to test out new skills that had been learned over the course of the previous year. And the reward for the winner was... hell if anyone knows.
