Royal relations are such a hassle.
Ji Chong finds he could care less about how gifting a jade pendant to a King's daughter would enhance their chances of trade with the neighbouring kingdom, or if a book of poetry would suit the taste of the fourth princess of Wuqiong. Politics and him cannot be found in one sentence, as simple as that.

But his father, that old sly man always manages to rope him into it.
Why can't he understand that Ji Chong just wants to be away from all this headache of a discussion before he loses his sanity ?

Because sadism has always been the left hand of royalty.

That would probably explain why they could never see eye to eye....Old butler Zhu had a really hard time pacifying things between them, if the alcohol wasn't involved before that is.

Ji Chong would never forget that embarrassing and indecent event which happened once because of that cursed liquid, all because it was his father's great idea that he confess while drunk.

Thankfully, Ma Zhai Xing was a patient woman and understood everything. While it had resulted in a heartbreak and awkward situation afterwards; Ji Chong was glad that they passed that situation quickly and were friends now. He still apologised whenever the incident was mentioned but Ma Zhai Xing would simply wave it off and they would joke about everything and anything like nothing ever happened.

Now, the same Ma Zhai Xing was coming to the Palace for a visit on her birthday and both the princes had to think of nice gifts for the princess.
Not just any gift, but something which would probably help build relations.

Ji Chong knew what his father was hinting at but he chose to keep his silence. Afterall, it wasn't like that the old man would listen to him anyway.

Also Ma Zhai Xing is his friend.
The only person who understands him well enough to knock some sense in him without the fear of being beheaded for raising her hand on a prince.

So here he was, lounging in his room after that boring discussion finally ended; brainstorming about the gift.
But even after thinking for the whole night, he drew blank.

His brother had decided on gifting Zhai Xing a specially crafted pearl and gold jade bracelets and a jade pendant set with gold and rubies, along with a set of dark blue and hue set of robes.
A nice choice, but nothing untoward. Ma Zhai Xing would probably wear them for the feast then roll her eyes at them in the privacy of her rooms.
