The doorbell rang through the house "one second!" Celeste called as she slipped on her socks, another rang resounded through the small house "I said one fucking second!" she called louder this time
No more rings came as Celeste slipped on her hoodie. She bounded down the stairs, to see Drew standing in the open doorway, chatting with someone. Shoving her feet into her tattered runners, Celeste pushed by him to see the devil herself standing on her front porch "Well cmon on in Cindy, I haven't seen you in forever" Drew exclaimed happily, but Celeste stepped outside with Cindy instead
"Uh actually, we're going out," Celeste grabbed Cindy's shoulder like they were friends "I'm trying to go for a more hands-on experience" She turned Cindy around and gave her a gentle nudge back towards the steps of the house
"See you later I guess" Drew chuckled as he shut the door, leaving the two girls on the porch
"Hands-on? What are you talking about?" Cindy remarked in confusion, furrowing her brow
Celeste rolled her eyes and marched down the driveway "We're not studying chemistry today Cindy"
"What the hell are you talking about? The chemistry project is the whole reason I'm here" Cindy refused to move from the porch
Celeste turned around to face her again "Do you want to go swimming?"
Cindy stood there, mouth slightly agape "do I want to- no! Of course, I don't want to go swimming! I'm here to work on our chemistry project" She shook her head in disbelief "and it's like the middle of winter! You're going to freeze"
"What elements are in the water?" Celeste questioned out of the blue
"Uh" Cindy stuttered "hydrogen and oxygen we learned this freshman year"
"Exactly!" Celeste clapped her hands together "See? We are learning chemistry Cid, because chemistry is all around us blah blah blah, do you get it?" Cid, Cindy was really hung up on how that word sounded on Celeste's tongue
"And hey if you're still not convinced, think of this as a team-building exercise" Celeste shrugged and spun back around, walking away with a hop in her step
Cindy bounded down the front porch steps after her "what if I don't want to swim?"
"Then sit on the rocks" Celeste laughed, cool and composed "now hurry up otherwise we're gonna miss our bus"
Cindy stood there watching Celeste walk away, sending daggers into the back of her head. This was not what she had signed up for. Whatever, she'd put up with Celeste for today, then tomorrow in class Cindy would ask Ms.Gilligan if she could switch partners, and she wouldn't have to put up with nonsense for a second longer. Cindy let out a long exasperated sigh, she had a plan. Then, Cindy ran after Celeste.
It didn't take the pair very long to get to their destination, and although Cindy had never been there, she did know where they were going. After all, it was the only place to swim in Shadyside. The swimming hole was usually heavily populated with families in the daytime and then rowdy teenagers in the nighttime, but by the end of January, it was populated by no one. It was usually where parties went down, which was why Celeste knew the route there like the back of her hand.
The swimming hole was not nice in any regard. The water was brown and dirty, and there was no sand, just rocks surrounding it. Not to mention it was in the middle of the woods.
"Do you know how to swim?" Celeste asked as they stood at the edge of the water, it was probably freezing. Cindy walked away from Celeste and took a seat on the rocks, it was sort of peaceful being in the middle of the woods
