"Fucking useless teacher."
Taeyong mutters under his breath as he collapses onto the bed of the hotel room, groaning loudly in defeat into his hands
Due to his unfortunate luck, the teacher didn't have access to Narae's files because she already graduated and left the school. He would have to arrive back first thing in the morning to see the files again since the manner of retrieving files of old students aren't simple.
And of course, Taeyong was far from happy because of that. All he wanted was to find his sister and prevent her from doing something she'll regret. He's fairly certain she's behind the murder of his parents, who else would be?
But she's M.I.A as if she just completely left Earth with no trace. Not even the forensics could find her fingerprints at the crime scene, probably meaning she wore gloves that she disposed of later to hid her fingerprints. She's a fucking psychopath, but she's intelligent and knows how to commit a flawless murder.
Too flawless. As if it wasn't a one-man job. As if she never committed the crime in the first place. Let's keep in mind she's a 19 girl, with probably no experience in fighting or even handling a knife. The chances of a hitman are starting to make Taeyong think that's what may have happened.
To make matters worse, almost all of his mother's and father's money that they kept in the bank was deposited and converted into cash. A hefty amount of money that could possibly be used to pay someone.
"Taeyong? Are you okay?"
Taeyong jumps to his feet and was about to prepare himself for a fight when he saw the petite girl standing in front of him. He lowers his weapon, feeling guilty for even raising his gun at her. "Sorry, Yeri. I'm not really in my right mind."
"It's alright, Taeyong. I understand how hard this might be to process. Don't worry, we'll find her and stop her from doing anything else." She pushes Taeyong down on the bed, sitting down next to him and placing a hand on his shoulder.
"I think she may have hired a hitman," Taeyong says. Yeri frowns at his response, upset that he ignored her words completely. He had always been persistent in focusing on work and only work, a quality that she didn't like of him. "Taeyong, are you serious? Are you physically capable of not thinking about work for once?"
"Listen, this is big! Money was extracted from my parent's bank account the morning of the killings. And on the murder scene, there were no other fingerprints or signs of another human. It was as if it was done by a professional! We just need to find out who and then-"
"Stop! You need to calm down and get some sleep. I care about you and your health and I don't want you like this. Please." Yeri begs him. "It's not illegal to take care of yourself every once in a while."
"But the case! We might just be able to solve it now. I don't want to relax if it means leaving another cased unsolved. I put people behind bars, not sit down on my ass all day and do nothing." Taeyong rolls his eyes.
Yeri was starting to get fed up with him and his pride. "Are you ignoring everything that I'm saying? You'd be a much better detective if you sat down every day and let yourself, I don't know, sleep! Do you think I only came here to your room to talk to you about work? People have lives outside of their jobs, Taeyong. You need to learn that."
"You don't get it, Yeri. People are dying at the hands of someone. If I stop to rest then who will be the next prey? That's just how things are in the life of a detective that actually cares about their job." Taeyong says, but he immediately regrets it after seeing the look on Yeri's face that let him know that he really messed up this time.
"Are you saying that I don't care about my occupation? Taeyong, if I didn't care then I wouldn't have begged the captain to let me on this case beforehand. I wouldn't have followed you to this terrible town and I wouldn't have been here trying to convince my fellow detectives to go to sleep. Don't you dare try and tell me I don't care about my job, you brainless prick!"
Yeri's voice was angry, and it definitely showed on her face as well. She spoke quickly but slow enough to let Taeyong proceed with her words. He had known Yeri from when they were in the police academy and not once had he ever heard her yell like that, especially at him. And to say it hurt his ego was an understatement.
But something that Taeyong won't admit is that he cares about Yeri far more than the other detectives. To the point where he would let himself catch a grenade if it meant that she would be protected.
Yet, at the end of the day, he can't sit down and accept he may have potential feelings for her. Because commitment is scary, really fucking scary. And he doesn't want to ruin a good friendship he has with her. Love has never been his prime interest even when he was a kid, why would it suddenly change for Yeri?
Because he liked her a lot but he refused to face that.
He huffs, staring into Yeri's eyes. It was as if she had a spell on him because he eventually complied. "Fine, but when we wake up we talk about my theory. Okay?"
Yeri smiles gently at him. "Thank you Taeyong. Get a good night's rest, and make sure the bed bugs don't bite. Seriously, I swear I felt something crawl up my leg when I sat down on the mattress."
They both let out hearty laughs, neither one of them recalling the moments before when they were yelling at each other. It was humourous and forgetful and so stupid that Taeyong felt... Bad. Something that he wasn't used to but he might learn about in the near future. He felt bad for yelling at her, and he also felt bad because she had gone through so much just for her to come on this mission.
Yeri leaves and Taeyong lets his head fall against the pillow, the memories from before showing in his head. Happiness. Something that he hadn't tasted since years ago until now. And it was all thanks to Yeri. It'll be a moment that, although was minor, he would cherish for the rest of the night.
Finally, a smile breaches across his face, and Taeyong falls asleep that night with only one girl appearing in his dreams.
