It was winter. The sun was hiding behind clouds. The birds singed songs of loneliness and cold. It was a Saturday and Melody found herself all bundled up, waiting for Peter John to come out of his house. She sat on her front porch and picked at the tips of her hair. She was starting to lose faith that Peter John was actually coming when the Summer's front door opened.
Melody's face lit up and she jumped to her feet. Her black boots made a thump as they landed on the concrete. "Hey, sorry it took me so long, family stuff," Peter John said as he entered the Richards' yard. She noticed Peter John had a bruise on his arm, but as he pulled his jacket on, it covered it up.
Melody nodded and put her hands in her jean's back pockets. "It is alright. Are you ready to go?" She asked, biting her lip.
"Yeah, of course," He smiled and they headed down the road. It did not take them long until they reached the train tracks. They started walking down them, not really going anywhere, just, wondering. The two friends chatted and talked together. Bonding and laughing.
"Good girl," Peter John nodded in conclusion of Melody's story.
"What am I a dog?"
"Well..." Peter John teased.
"Hey!" Melody accused though she was laughing.
"Mel, you are crazy."
Melody shrugged and quietly said, "I know." She smiled down at her toes, her cheeks slightly turning pink. She ran ahead before Peter John noticed. "Think I can balance on this track?" She asked her friend before jumping on the train track that lay before them. She took a few steps before falling off. Peter John chuckled. "Oh, I like to see you do any better!" She defended herself but soon laughed with Peter John.
"Challenge accepted." He stood up and made only a step more than Melody before he too, fell off the tiny sliver of train track.
"Here," Melody said, hiding a smile, "Let's try together." She stood on one side of the tracks and held out her hand. Peter John took it and stood on the other side. They balanced upon each other and walked down the tracks.
They continued with silly conversations and went a long ways before turning around. They made it to the main road in what seemed like five minutes to the two of them. Peter John's long legs and brisk pace made it hard for Melody to keep up. She decided to try to match his stride. She looked utterly ridiculous. However, she was happy. Anyone could see the love they both shared for each other, even if they could not see it themselves. Now as the sun slipped lower, their conversations got deeper.
"Are you alright? You seem a bit... off." Melody spoke.
It took a moment before Peter John answered. It was as if he was thinking long and hard about it. He answered with a simple, "Well..." Before adding, "The dark was meant to be explored. The world was meant to be traveled. Yet I am stuck here. I still have my waiting to do and I hate every moment of it." He trailed off and before adding, "Well hate is a little strong, there is some good here."
"I would think so," Melody said, "After all, I am here." She waited for the teasing comment she was sure would follow but instead Peter John stopped and looked at her. His eyes filled with emotions she could not read. "Peter John?" she asked confused.
"You are right. I do have you. You have always been her for me, Melody, always." Peter John looked her dead in the eye. Her cheeks turned a light shade of red. They turned even redder as Peter John leaned in. Their lips met and spark flooded Melody's body. It made her knees weak.
Peter John pulled away first. "I'm sorry. I should not have done that. I don't know what" Peter John began but Melody stopped him with another kiss. This one filled with much more passion yet just as tender.
"It is okay," She whispered. The two lovers' hearts fluttered. Nothing seemed more right. However, that would soon change.
