Soldier is book 3 of Julie Kawaga's Talon series. I experienced it through audiobook form, and the review is smaller in part because of this.
The price of freedom is everything.
When forced to choose between safety with the dragon organization Talon and being hunted forever as an outcast, Ember Hill chose to stand with Riley and his band of rogue dragons rather than become an assassin for Talon. She's lost any contact with her twin brother, Dante, a Talon devotee, as well as Garret, the former-enemy soldier who challenged her beliefs about her human side.
As Ember and Riley hide and regroup to fight another day, Garret journeys alone to the United Kingdom, birthplace of the ancient and secret Order of St. George, to spy on his former brothers and uncover deadly and shocking secrets that will shake the foundations of dragons and dragonslayers alike and place them all in imminent danger as Talon's new order rises
This definitely felt like a step up from Rogue. Rogue was okay, don't get me wrong, but this one more than any of the other books felt like it was the first step toward a greater, overarching plot. Also... There were some annoying things introduced that were very reminiscent of the oh-so-amazing Werewolf genre *cringe*, but it felt like Kagawa is trying to go the way I'd much rather those tropes went. Always interested in the dragon-vs-human thing Ember has going which really seemed prevalent in this book, and Garret was a main focus. Given he's my favorite... Yes, let's go! Everyone else is still enjoyable, though Dante is more just a lens than anything this book. Also, more dragon magic, and a new aspect to the dragons that I enjoyed (the magical aspect, not the thing borrowing from werewolves). I will say, I *hate* the ending... But that's more because I started the next audiobook right after and realized what an idiotic place it was to end.
