The People We Once Knew

The deafening silence was almost too much to bear.

Sans sat in place, waiting for you to make some sort of reaction, but you only gaped in shock. Your mouth bobbed like a fish out of water, and only after a minute closing it and taking a dry swallow of saliva. You hung your head, staring into your lap. Your pants were slightly dirty from being on the ground, and singed with burns from the explosion.

You shivered suddenly from a gust of air that blasted from under the door, having been worn down over the years. Goosebumps raised on your arms, causing you to rub your hands over them in an attempt to warm up despite being inside of the home already. Soon, though, you felt a heavy weight drape over your shoulders. Looking up, Sans was standing up, no longer wearing the blue coat. He now only wore a plain white shirt.

"i think it's about time you had it back. it's yours, after all."

Tugging at the coat, the faint smell of ketchup and hot dogs emitted from it. Pulling it over, you saw the stitches that you had put into the jacket so many years ago. You smiled sadly at it, and pushed it back into Sans' hands. He looked back at you confused.

"You should keep it. This'll be the start of paying back all of the birthdays I missed."

"heh.. if you do that, you're gonna make me tear up again."

He winked and pointed to a little rip in one of the sleeves, making you snort in laughter.

"Hey, how do you steal a coat?"

"i don't know, how do you?"

"You jacket."

You both barked in laughter, and Sans slid on his coat again again. While you calmed down, he teleported and came right back, but with another jacket. It was almost exact to the one he wore, but it had a black hood instead. Handing it to you, you thanked him and put it on.

"i don't ever wear this one, so you can keep it."

"Thank you Sansy.."

Sans got embarrassed over his childhood nickname, you not being the last to call him that after.. The incident. He laughed it off, though, and nodded in response.

Suddenly, ringing drowned out your thoughts and Sans went to look at his phone. Looking at it yourself, your eyebrows raised at the futuristic look it had. It was sleek and thin, having a full touch screen. The one you had owned before was just a flip phone, but even then it was one of the newer models. He held it up to the side of his skull to answer.

" 'sup, kid... uhuh.. again?.. yeah, yeah. wait, now?... uh, no reason... yup.. yup. m'kay. see ya later, kiddo."

He hung up the phone and looked back to you with a glint in his eye.

"Who was that? One of your friends?"

"yeah, you could say that. they said uh.. actually, why don't we wait? you'll see soon enough."

You quirked an eyebrow at his words, but said nothing about it. He smiled lazily, but you could tell he was happy at the moment. His eye bags almost, almost, didn't seem noticeable. While you were still upset over the fact that you had missed his entire childhood, their childhood, you couldn't imagine what Sans had to go through. Both of the adults in his life had disappeared over night, and he was left with a baby brother all by himself.
