Grace

"But, Mommm! Why do I have to go to nursery school? What's wrong with me helping you at home?" Grace asked her Mom, not wanting to go to the strange place with lots of children. "It's important that you learn how to read and write, and it would be good if you made some friends." Her mother reasoned, kneeling down to her daughter's height and putting her hands on her shoulders as she spoke. "But I can already do that, and you're my friend." Grace said whilst crossing her arms over her chest and giving her Mom her best glare. "Okay then, how about this. You try it for one week, and if you don't like it then you won't have to do it anymore, but if you do like it, then you stay. Please just one week." Her mother found that compromises often worked with her often stubborn daughter. "Fiine!" Grace wrapped her little arms around her Mom's neck and gave her a quick hug, "I love you." "I love you too," she hugged her back, "have a good day."

Grace waved at her Mother as she ran into the playground where the other children were. She went over to a bench in the corner and put her little bag next to her. Her Mom had packed her some pencils and a notepad, for her to do her 'doodles', a water bottle, a lunch containing a sandwich and an apple, and the last thing in the bag was her reading book, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.

She looked around. There were children fighting over a swing, and others running round in circles. All playing with the things in the playground. There was a little field off to the side, and there were daisies dotted on the green grass, the sky behind it was blue with only a few clouds, and of course the blistering sun, Grace didn't look at the sun, her Mother said that it could hurt your eyes, there were only a few houses on the horizon to disrupt the picture.

The field scene to Grace was quite pretty, so she bought out her notepad and pencil and started to draw it. Starting with the houses, then the sun, then the blue sky and white clouds, and then the grass, she finished it by adding dots of white over the green of the grass. She smiled at her work, she would give it to her Mother later.

She flipped the page over and wrote one word at the top of the page, 'math' in her best handwriting. She began to write lots of little sums, and then filled in the answers.

Math

1+1=2

1+2=3

1+3=4

1+4=5

1+5=6

She had only finished half a page when she saw someone sitting down beside her. She looked up to see a boy about her age with messy light brown hair and green eyes like leaves. She thought that his eyes were nice. "Hello, my name is Seth," he put his hand out and she shook it.

"I'm Grace, it's nice to meet you," her Mother had taught her how to be polite to new people, her Mum called it small talk. She looked at Seth a little bit more, he was blue wearing denim shorts and a green t-shirt that said 'adventure' on it.

"What are you writing?" Seth asked curiously. Grace turned her notebook so that he could see, "Math, my Mom taught me how to do it." Seth's facial expression changed, his eyebrows merged together as he looked at what Grace had been writing. "Oh, that looks a little bit like what my Dad started teaching me," he looked away, "I didn't understand it though." Grace smiled, "That's fine, I can try and teach you." A grin spread across Seth's face, "Thanks!"
