Prologue

All Diana's parents ever wanted was for her to play the piano at church. With both her parents musically-gifted, her mom was the choir director at Sunnyvale Christian Church and her dad taught private piano lessons to the children of the wealthy families in Sunnyvale, Diana learned to sing and play the piano at the early age of four. She played the piano and started singing solo parts in the choir in church and at school productions when she was eight. She started to teach private piano and singing lessons to the European children in her community when she was 13 because she too was half European. Her dad, Daniel Samuelson was American and her mom, Stefania Moretti was Italian. She did everything her parents wanted her to do and she had accomplished what her parents wanted her to be at a very early age. Now, seventeen year-old Diana wants out. She had gotten sick and tired of playing the piano and singing for people she knew over and over again. All she ever wanted was to sing and play the piano in her own concert while wearing a red Valentino gown with thousands of audience she never knew. Now, Diana has decided enough is enough. She will do anything to get what she wants and she won't let anyone get in her way, even her parents.

Chapter One

Sbrigati, Diana! We’re going to be late for choir practice!” my mom who was at the garage yelled at  me in my bedroom. My mom could scream, that’s for sure. I don’t want to go to choir practice, I never did want to go. I hated it, but what can I do? My parents were in charge of my life, not me. I looked at my reflection at the mirror and sighed. When will I be able to do what I want and be able to make my own decisions? “Coming, mom,” I said while getting my choir piece and dashing down the stairs to the garage, where my mom was waiting. When I got to our Ford Expedition, mom immediately started the car and drove. “ Mom, can I not sing today? I’ll just play the piano,” I asked my mom, nervous that she won’t let me, like every time I ask her. “ Diana, you know, we need your voice. Our choir song today depends on the ladies’ voices and you know that,” mom said.

“I know that, mom, but..”

“No buts, Diana.”

“ Mom, please. It’s only for today. Next Sunday I’ll sing for the choir again.”

“Diana, Diana, Diana.”

“Mom, mom, mom.”

“You promise it’s only for today?”

“Yes. I swear next Sunday I’ll sing.”

“Well, OK then. It’s only for today.”

“Thank you so much, mom!”

I can’t believe she actually let me! Normally she’ll just say, “Sorry. That’s not happening today, Diana. Life’s complicated. Deal with it.” Normally I never get   to do what I want. One time in fourth grade, our class had a field trip to the zoo so I asked mom if I could go but, she said no, so I begged her to let me go. I even got on my knees begging her, but she never let me.I cried the whole day because she never let me, but all she said instead of comforting me was, “ Life’s complicated. You’ve got to deal with it, hon.” I just don’t know what got into my mom today. It’s not that I don’t like that she let me. I guess I’m just shocked my mom actually let me. I can’t help but smile all the way to church.
