The streaming service Netflix pays people to watch series, which is exactly what the so-called taggers do.

Whether the lawyer series "Suits" or the prison saga "Orange Is the New Black" – as soon as a new season of such hit shows is available on Netflix, many will rush to the new episodes. The very tough ones watch all the episodes in one go – that's called "bingen" (in German: stuffing yourself with something). In fact, there are even people who Netflix pays to watch series and films all day, what these so-called taggers do – and what entry requirements there are for this dream job.

Netflix Tagger: This is what the dream job is all about

At Netflix there is a full team that deals with categorizing the content. There are currently around 75 people working in Mike Hastings' department, almost half of whom are taggers: Their job is to watch series and films on Netflix and to create keywords for them. With the help of these notes, the series within Netflix are assigned to certain categories, for example. The headings you see when you open the app are also from this team. Tagger and her colleagues determine whether a film can be found in categories such as "Perfect for a series marathon" or "Weird US series". Such assignments help Netfilx to make better suggestions for interesting content to its users.

Netflix Tagging: Hundreds of keywords per episode

At a Netflix event in Berlin, Hastings, Director of Enhanced Content at Netflix, put the journalists present to the test: How many useful keywords can you filter out while watching a few minutes of the comedy series "Master of None"? Relationships, New York, cooking, difficult parents, love, breakups, multicultural – a few dozen terms actually come together. However, that would be far too little for a professional tagger: According to Hastings, a single series episode on Netflix is linked to 200 to 300 keywords. A film can even have up to 4,000 key words.

Watch Netflix as a 40-hour week

But wouldn't it be enough for series to just watch one episode? Hastings shakes his head: The taggers have to watch and tag every episode from every season in full – 40 hours a week. In addition to key words on genres and other content, they also have to give a graded assessment of certain content. This includes, for example, rating on a scale from 1 to 9 how violent a film or series is.

Netflix Tag: The Job Requirements

Unfortunately, Netflix taggers are not allowed to determine what content they watch and tag for themselves. Netflix assigns them what to watch – but tries to take into account the preferences of the taggers when possible. It doesn't put you off that you may have to watch entire seasons of series that you don't like at all? Then keep an eye out for a job as a tagger on Netflix's careers page. Netflix expects experience in the film industry or as a film critic for the job. Unfortunately, the positions are rare and not often advertised. Currently only this job offer is going in the right direction.
