"- Checkmate"

"- There's no denying it, you're really the smarter of the two of us little sister."

He slowly gets up from the brown leather sofa in the living room.

His uniform seems heavy on his shoulders.

His black shoes seem to crush every one of your false hopes with every step he takes on the crimson carpet of the room.

Your big brother reaches your level, and bends down so that his turn is at the same level as you.

He sighs, and smiles sadly at you.

You had kept the game going as long as possible.

You didn't want him to go away, he couldn't abandon you.

His cologne filled your nostrils. His blue eyes were empty of tears, and your brown eyes were overflowing with them.

There was no way out of the situation. Like in a chess game, you had turned the problem over and over, looking for the smallest solution to save your brother, in vain.

His armband seemed to be tearing his arm off. He had never wanted it, and yet everyone wanted him to wear it with pride.

He gently kisses your cheek, and straightens up.

He was your pillar.

He was the one who had taught you to read, write, count, reason, argue.

You would be a wonderful woman of letters according to him.

You get up from your chair and slip a scented letter and your favorite ribbon into his pocket.

You swallowed your tears, as a solitaire rolled down your brother's skin.

This was the end, he knew it.

He gently patted your head, and opened the door to the living room, before walking away from you for good.

"- Thank you for the years little sister."

He left the house to join his regiment at the train station, and you broke down, crying your eyes out.

The walls seemed to close in around you, and the books in the library fell on you.

You ran to the window to see your brother approaching the streetcar to get on and join death.

You then run down the stairs and open the front door wide.

"- Big brother! Don't leave me alone! Stay home, I beg you! I'll let you win all the next chess games we play, but don't leave me here!"

You wanted to run out of your home, to hold him back with all your might.

However, your nanny noticed you and came to take you in her arms, to bring you back inside and avoid that the neighborhood would attend to your whim.

Your brother heard you very well.

He would recognize your voice from miles away.

He had decided not to watch you screaming and struggling.

He knew that if he did, if he dared to look at you for even a millisecond, he would be able to give up everything to take you with him and get you out of the country, far, far away from this whole mobid, power-mad charade.

 But that was impossible.

Your leader had won this game.

His eyes filled with tears again, as he clutched your ribbon in his fist.

He lowered his head, and bit his lower lip to silence his sobs.

-" Checkmate."
