But whenever she thinks of her future with him and the things that would happen after their wedding, there was guilt and regret. They both never wanted it in the first place; they were pressured to satisfy their citizen's expectations and she knew that very well, but she caught feelings for him even though she knew he'd never feel the same way. 

She knew the hero loved her as a close friend, never as a lover. It's hard to pretend dumb and watch your fiancé be miserable while the days count closer to your wedding day. For both of their sakes, she needed an excuse to not marry him...and good thing she already has one.

In unexpected circumstances, the princess has fallen in love with another person...and that person happens to be the one who was known to be the terrifying and cruel dark 'lord'. Their love didn't bloom easily though; there were misunderstandings, fights, and hatred before they developed feelings.

The villainess visited the dungeons one day to count all the royalties she kidnapped when her eyes landed on her highness, memories of their adolescent friendship flooded her mind. Feeling guilty, the dark lady offered her to move in a more suitable room as a guest, but the princess didn't cooperate; she wouldn't follow her anywhere if it means leaving the other royalties in the dungeon. Thus the lady had no choice but to move everyone to more comfortable quarters. 

The castle guest rooms were completely full for the first time in many years. Though everyone was finally free from the dungeon cells and were welcomed as guests, the princess still acted spiteful and distant towards the villainess until she finally decides to give her a chance. Then as the days turned into weeks, they became close like they once were. She saw the same shy and intelligent princess the dark lady once was again.
