CHAPTER 17: SCARECROW
Mikaere is not trying to eavesdrop as she stares up at the foreboding house, but she can hear Tommy whispering to Vaughn. Something about, why didn't you tell me she said anything. And should we even be doing this, then, And I think she actually might dislike you more now, in that case.
"We'll be staying back here," Tommy then announces. "You and Darren should go on, though."
She suddenly trusts none of them and quickly turns to Vaughn.
"What is this?" She says lowly to him, thinking of how loudly Tommy whispers, of how ominous this driveway is.
I'm on the driveway to hell, she thinks in tune to the popular rock song before she frowns. Maybe I'm just psyching myself out. But still, she waits for his answer which comes a second later.
"It's just some harmless challenge that was implemented years ago," he replies just as low.
"But is it really that bad, though?"
"It's not what you think, Mik," he says. "But don't do it if you don't want to. I'll suggest we go to a restaurant or something instead."
"Will you come with-" She starts, but then she's suddenly being dragged away, and Vaughn shoots the person responsible an irritated glance.
Darren sees it but ignores him, putting a bold arm around Mikaere. "C'mon, let's just go ring the doorbell and get this over with," he insists.
And she lets herself be guided down the driveway, hearing the crunching of leaves beneath their shoes, wondering what's gotten into him. He's usually not like this, when it's just the two of them or if Malee is there. She's grateful when he drops his arm, letting out a quiet sigh.
...
"She's probably disabled it all by now, anyway," Tommy comments.
"Yes," Vaughn replies.
...
"Boy, this sure is a scary house, huh?" Darren remarks. "Scary shutters. Scary rooftop. Scary yard. And look at that, even a-"
"If you say scary one more time I'll-"
"Kiss me?"
Everyone at the end of the driveway watches with either surprised wide eyes or lifted eyebrows, some more interested in the conversation happening a few yards away than others.
"What?" Mikaere's so taken aback she freezes, eyes wide as she stares up at him.
Malee's certainly taken aback as Mikaere is. Tommy totally saw it coming. Zeke and Siara look as if they wish they had popcorn, and Vaughn and Jasmine are just bored.
