Eve was relieved when they had got back to the cabin. The trip there had been uneventful. Although it had been difficult to say goodbye to Joanne as they had left her at Alpha Ian's pack. Eve knew she would happy there with some family. She had already started to help out around in the kitchens when she had free time.
Before long she would be completely settled in – and Eve was happy for that.
She sat out on the front steps of the cabin waiting for the sun to fall below the trees. Despite all of the pain she was still feeling – she somehow felt at peace, more at peace than she had been in months.
The bords creaked as Curtis stepped outside and lowered himself down to the ground next to her.
'How are you feeling?' He said as he stretched his arms up with a satisfied groan.
'Good. I think,' she replied with a soft smile.
They sat together in silence – a comfortable and embracing silence.
Hesitating for moment, Eve slowly reached out and placed her hand over Curtis' hand that rested on his knee. Curtis tried not to smile too widely but he physically couldn't restrain the muscles in his cheeks.
'I'm happy here... with you... you make me happy,' Eve spoke with a little insecurity.
Curtis turned to face her as she kept gazing forward.
'You make me happy too,' he said into the quietness that surrounded them.
Finally, she turned to meet his gaze and returned. She knew – in every ounce of her being – that this was where she was meant to be. Curtis was the one who she would spend the rest of her life with – loved, appreciated, and understood.
'Thank you. For everything that you have done for me. You gave me that chance to become myself again,' Eve whispered leaning forward so that their foreheads were pressed together.
'No, thank you for everything that you have done for me,' Curtis replied his eyes closed, embracing the closeness of Eve.
Reaching up delicately she placed the palm of her hand on his cheek. Leaning forward, she placed a soft kiss on his lips. It was brief but filled with care.
Together, they sat in a silent embrace as the sky turned dark and the stars appeared overhead.
