Diana's sibling walked into her room with a golden-brown lantern glowing brightly. It's late, far past their bedtime. She sighed.
"What is it this time?" she asks, expecting the same answer she's gotten the last few nights. Her sibling had been experiencing some weird nightmares lately, the past week has been full of late-night wake-ups, which is the reason Diana was up this late reading, so that she could receive her non-binary sibling without having to be woken up for the sixth time.
"Uncle Sam wants to see us in the kitchen, should we go?" They say, looking a little scared at the thought of going downstairs to the kitchen.
"Why would he want to see us so late at night?" She closes her book, and starts to get out of the bed.
"He said he would explain when we were both there," they wait for Diana to get out of bed and grab her lantern, then they open the door and they both head into the hallway.
The whole house was dark, and the blue walls were barely visible in the two lanterns' glows. Diana's sibling seemed nervous, but she didn't say anything. They crept downstairs together, hoping they wouldn't wake up their parents while they were up way past their bedtimes. Once getting to the kitchen, Diana opened the door and walked into the bright yellow room, just as dark as the rest of the house. The kitchen's walls were a yellow colored pencil yellow, with a white diamond pattern running down to the darker gold trim. The cabinets were a dark wood color that somehow matched well with the rest of the kitchen, same with the dining table in the middle with three chairs on the long sides and space for one chair on each end. Uncle Sam was sitting in the corner chair farthest from the door and looked worried.
"You called for us?" Diana asks, closing the door behind her sibling.
"Yes, I did.. Listen you two, from now on you are in terrible danger every night. It is good you have your lanterns, for you are going to need them." Uncle Sam states as Diana and her sibling get closer.
"What do you mean, Uncle?" Diana asks.
"There are creatures in the dark, and they want to take us.. I'm not sure what for, maybe they just want to eat us, maybe they just want us dead, but whatever you do, don't leave the light." Uncle Sam warns the pair of children, as they go wide-eyed with fear. However, Diana seems to regain her composure and asks, "and how do we know these things even exist??" she puts on a brave face, expecting there to be no proof. But Diana is quickly stopped in her tracks when Uncle Sam reveals his legs, or lack thereof...
"Oh my god..." escapes Diana's mouth as she processes what is laid before her, her sibling clutches Diana's long blue shirt in fear.
"Yeah, we'll.. We'll follow what you said..." Diana manages to mutter, before leading herself and her sibling away from the gruesome sight and back to her bedroom to huddle in the blankets.

Diana and her sibling stumble into the kitchen as their mother is cooking their breakfast and their dad sits in the same spot Uncle Sam had been last night. The sunlight shone through the small window on the wall across from the door, giving the walls a glow.
"Good morning, sweeties!" their mother chimed as they walked in the door and took their normal seats across each other nearest the door.
"Good morning mum.." they replied in tandem, just as tired from their all-nighter as the other.
"And why are you two so tired? Did Susie not listen to me and wake you up again?" their dad asks condescendingly, using Sammy's dead name instead.
