I’m early for our next lesson.
I had another lesson at ten, you see, so I was already in the music school. When Jack arrived, I was sitting on the armchair with my guitar in my hands, trying to figure out a verse to a song that I’d been working on.
“And I’ve spent too many summers without your warmth -” I sang, tapping my foot as a makeshift metronome.
“Too many winters without my -” chord change, “-arms wrapped -” chord change, “around you.”
I paused to scribble down the changes that I’d made, then continued with the song.
"I’ve been tying all my wishes to the shooting stars, hoping that they’ll find their way to you.”
“Sounds good,” Jack said.
I jumped, my imaginary world dissolving immediately.
“Hey,” I said, blushing, “I didn’t even know you were here.”
“I can be quiet when I want to be,” Jack replied with a chuckle. He walked across the room to sit down beside me. “Thanks for making time for me today.”
“Oh, it was no problem,” I assured him, “You said you were going to LA?”
Jack nodded. “We’re playing a gig. It’s a charity thing, I think.”
“You think?” I said with a smile.
He blushed. “I’m not good at listening in at band meetings...”
“I can tell,” I said with a laugh. “Probably too busy snorting cocaine and masturbating, right?”
Jack laughed. “Oh yeah, the true rockstar lifestyle.”
“Anyway,” I said with a giggle, “How did you find the scales? It’s okay if you didn’t get a whole lot of time to practise, I know we only had the lesson two days ago -”
“No, no!” Jack said quickly. His expression turned proud. “I practised loads... They’re surprisingly fun.”
“Really? I’ve always hated scales.”
Jack frowned. “Maybe... because you felt like you had to do them. But I’m here because I want to be. I want to learn, you know?”
I smiled. “That’s an interesting thought.”
He shrugged.
“I would have figured that the bigtime rockstar wouldn’t have time for scales, though,” I teased him lightly.
“I managed to find some time to practise between orgies,” He replied. “Even it did cut into the hour I’d reserved for snorting cocaine.”
I laughed. “I’m sorry for taking up so much of your time.”
“Yeah, you suck.”
“Well, this will be the last time, anyway,” I said casually, as I pulled over a blank tab sheet. “So, do you want to learn some more scales or start with some written music?”
“Uh, whatever -” Jack said, frowning suddenly. “What do you mean ‘this will be the last time’? Aren’t I doing anymore lessons?”
“However many you want,” I told him, “But technically you’re not my student - your usual lessons are on Saturdays, and I don’t actually work on Saturdays. I think Lucy is supposed to be teaching you after this.”
