I'd known since birth who my soulmates were and maybe my knowing so early on contributed to the path I decided to take in life. I choose the more difficult path in life where nothing comes easy and everything you have, and everything you do is something you fought for. Sometimes life likes to throw me for a loop and surprise me. The first surprise came when I was eight I'd gone to bed in my lilac and green bedroom inside the tiny cottage I shared with my mother in upstate Vermont. The covers tucked tight around me and my rotating star night light gently whirring on my bedside table lulling me to sleep.
I remember the cold that's what had woken me up it was suddenly so cold in my room and it made no sense as my mom always kept the house warm. I'd sat up rubbing the sleep from my eyes and threw my legs over the side of the bed allowing my feet to touch the ground below. My feet should have been meeting with a warm pair of bunny slippers that I kept beside my bed, but instead, I was met with snow. Layers upon layers of white fluff sat around me as far as my eye could see. It didn't take me long at all to realize this wasn't home.
Figuring it was a dream I'd tried to hop back into my warm bed and do like Dorthy said and wish for home, but when I turned around my bed was no longer there in its place was this purple wisp. It was glowing and hovering in the air in the exact place my bed had been. I clutched the stuffed bunny tighter in my hands as I stared at it. I wanted to go home I did not want to be here. Eventually, it floated a few paces in front of me before pausing my gut was telling me to go the opposite way. I don't know what compelled me to but I decided to follow the wisp.
Walking behind the wisp I shivered each time my bare feet touched the snow-covered ground my bunny clutched tightly in my grasp as I did. Halfway through our journey to our destination, I had wanted to stop but the wisp had stopped with me not moving until I did so I had decided to see it through. After what must have been hours of walking through the snow shivering as I went we came upon a building. It blended in extremely well with the snow. Almost like a bunker, the building seemed to be one level. I wanted to go in so I could get warm but when I went to take a step towards the huge steel door, the wisp did not follow my lead instead it headed in another direction.
Figuring it knew best I followed it as it lead me around the building. I kept walking looking around me as the snow continued to fall it was peaceful it was quiet. I eventually got so lost in thought that I continued walking eventually I noticed that the wisp was not walking in front of me anymore and turned back around to see where it went before I noticed it hovering in one area. Running back to the wisp I edged closer so that I could see what it was paused in front of. Seeing nothing I looked to the wisp for direction confusion clear on my face.
The wisp suddenly seemed to surround me, so that it encased me entirely before pulling me in. I was inside the wisp as it seemed to look for something before suddenly I was squeezed through a tight space as it roughly spits me out inside the building we were standing outside of a minute ago. It was dark in here, scarily so I didn't like the vibes I got from within this building it felt wrong. I turned to see if there was an exit nearby and couldn't see one in sight. Feeling a tug on my pigtail I turned to see the wisp pulling me in the opposite direction of where I figured the exit could be. I shook my head no to show the wisp that I did not want to go in that direction and all it did was tug on my pigtail once more before letting go and moving in the direction it wanted.
