Just another short, quick explanation.

So, I think I've seen a lot of people arguing about how someone's name should be spelled. I want to give explanation to clear it up a little bit.

For instance, the name of the Oldest Demon Lord which is written as ギィ (read as Gii) in katakana. I think the most widely accepted spelling is "Guy". But some people would argue that it doesn't make sense, because the katakana pronunciation isn't nowhere near the English pronunciation of "Guy".

Another example is ファルムス (read as Farumusu), the name of that damn kingdom. Is it "Falmuth", or "Farmus", or "Falmus", or even "Pharmus"?

To be frank, there is neither right nor wrong spelling. It's all up to you of how you interpret it. The names in the LN are originally written in katakana, which is frequently used to recreate the native pronunciation into the closest Japanese pronunciation. It's just "the closest pronunciation", after all, so this causes so many different interpretations.

If you're still wondering about Guy (or Gii), then let me explain. Let's consider his title as the Primordial Red Demon, ルージュ (Rūju) or Rouge, which is the French word for "Red". If we try to pronounce "Guy" in French instead, the pronunciation now changes into "Gii"-like sound. So, the spelling "Guy" does make sense.

Then, there is ルミナス (Ruminasu), the apparent God of Western Holy Church. So, is it "Luminous" or "Ruminas"? If you want the spelling closest to how it is read, then you can choose "Ruminas". But if you consider how Japanese would pronounce "Luminous" which they often pronounce as "Ruminasu", then "Luminous" is the best option.

So really, this is just about how you interpret it and how you get into the said interpretation. Just make sure that you're consistent on using it.

But, if you're still unsure of what you should use, then use the official spellings. You can open https://www.ten-sura.com/character (you can also open the external link I've attached to this section).

This is how the official site spells some names, compared to the other spellings.

(Fortunately, there is no any disagreements in Rimuru's name spelling)
