This isn't much, but I've kept you waiting too long

Now, don't get the wrong idea. This was no sparkling metropolis like it might have been before the power outage. It was seemingly abandoned and crumbling, but in the mass evacuations, there was hope of stuff. Just random stuff, that we could perhaps make use of. The first store we came across hd already been raided. Oh, and it looked like a full-blown riot had been compacted into the small gas station convenience store and then trapped there for a year, endlesly rioting. Nothing was intact. Nothing. "Mom," I said cautiously, unsettled by the strange rubble, "maybe we should go back and get Bex..." Kindle nodded in agreement "This looks dange-" he was cut off by a screeching sound that made every hair on my body stand on end. No one needed to announce it this time, we all just ran.

Bex felt it. That bad feeling in the corner of his mind that things beyond normal were coming. "Start packing." He said suddenly to Yenellda, still rigid from the Sense. "What about Kindle and the others?" She asked anxiously. "If they get here before the mutants do, we can just run with them. If they don't..." Bex looked at her with pained eyes for a moment, then began packing. He couldn't think about that right now. They had to make it.

Many other strange cries rang throghout the demolished buildings, and I could have sworn I heard a Banshee's screech among them. We didn't look behind us, though I badly wanted to. What other chance would I ge to assess new mutants? Then I realized that wasstupid and re-focused on running.
