Nobody was expecting the PA system to go off in the middle of the school day. The only time when it did was usually either to drag a student into the principal's office. Or if there was an emergency. The latter rarely happened, so when the chime of a bell signaling the start of the announcement, I hardly paid it any mind. That was until I heard who the voice was addressing.
"Students and staff, please gather your things and move to the main gym quickly and effectively. There is no need to panic, but please do not take any countermeasures against these instructions. Thank you for your cooperation." The sound of the phone being clicked into the holder signaled the end of the announcement. It was a short one, but it was straight and to the point. It started getting me thinking about what might be happening in the middle of the school day, and whether or not this was a prank or not. It seemed like my classmates were thinking the same thing because at first, nobody moved. We all looked to our professor, who had been in the middle of an English lesson. He sighed, snapping the book in his hands shut.
"Well?" he asked, sounding irritated. "You have ears. Get moving."
The classroom then erupted with the sound of scraping chairs and hushed chatter. The other kids in my class were walking out the door, presumably towards the main gym. I got up from my desk, haphazardly shoving my notebooks and pencils into my backpack. Swinging the strap over my shoulder, I walked to one of the desks in the back, where my best friend Yoongi sat.
He wasn't packing up his stuff or standing up or even looking a little confused, like everyone else. Instead, Yoongi was slumped over the desk, fast asleep. He always talked about how English was the best class to sleep through, especially since the teacher couldn't see more than three feet in front of him. I guess it was true, but how could he be so clocked out that he missed the PA system? I shook his shoulder. He sat up.
"Sorry! What was the question? Huh? Hoseok?" Yoongi's brown hair was sticking up weirdly on the side he'd been lying. I stifled a laugh. He glared at me. "What're you laughing at?"
"Nothing, hyung." I waved my hand in front of my face. Yoongi squinted his eyes at me suspiciously. "Anyways, we've gotta go," I said, hurriedly changing the subject.
"Huh?" Yoongi's eyes flicked to the clock on the wall and then to the empty seats around us. "Class isn't over, though."
"I know." I grabbed Yoongi's notebook from off his desk, sliding it into the backpack hanging off his chair. "But there was an announcement over the PA system. I can't believe you slept through it! The entire school is being called to the main gym."
"Huh." Yoongi stood up, taking his backpack from me. "Interesting."
"Is 'huh' the only thing you're gonna say?" I asked, amused.
"I've said more than just 'huh.'" He mumbled under his breath. I laughed again as we walked out of the classroom. but am cut short after we come face-to-face with our same cranky professor. He's probably even more cranky because his lecture got cut short. I gulped. Yoongi kept his head down, continuing down the hallway without making eye contact.
"Mr. Min."
Yoongi froze in his tracks. He turned around shakily. "Sir?"
"I won't ask for an explanation of why you were asleep during my class, or why Mr. Jung knew about it and didn't say anything." He gave me a stern look and I gulped again. "But I expect for it not to happen in the future."
"Yes sir." Yoongi and I chorused.
"Good. Now get moving."
I bowed frantically as I rushed after Yoongi, who had already gotten halfway down the hallway. "Sheesh," I sighed, letting out the breath I didn't realize I was holding. "That was terrifying."
