Hello, my name is Sarah and this is my vacation story.

I was on a vacation in Hawaii.  We were about to hike up a volcano.  My sister, Sydney, was carrying her teddy bear, Fluffs.  My mother's phone rang.

"Hello," she said.  A few minutes went by.  I sat down impatiently.

Finally, I though when she hung up.

"Let's go," Mom said.  I grabbed my backpack as I took a sip of water.  Sydney held Fluffs.  We all started to hike up the volcano.

A few minutes later we heard rumbling.  The ground shook.  Sydney got knocked off her feet.  I almost fell over but I caught myself.  My mom grabbed onto a rock.

"Mom," I said, "I think we'd better go!"

"I agree," Mom said.  She grabbed Sydney and we ran down the volcano.  It didn't take long because Sydney moved slowly on the way up, so we didn't have much ground to cover.  It was the only time we had ever been in Hawaii, so we didn't know what everyone else did during eruptions.  We thought the best choice was to get on a boat and get away as soon as possible.

There was a boat with many people getting on.  We decided to see if we could get on, too.  The ground rumbled many times.  We went to the man who was loading the boat and asked if we could get on.  More rumbling.  The man said, "Yes, but please hurry!"

We all settled on the boat just as the ground rumbled again.  The man started the motor and away we went.  Ashes started to shoot out of the volcano.  Following that was lava.  We watched as it flowed down.  It was a terrible eruption.  It covered most of the island.

"This doesn't usually happen," the boatman said.  So, apparently this isn't supposed to happen.

We were heading for safety on another island.  We were probably halfway there when we heard a small splash.

"Fluffs!" I head Sydney shout.  I looked over and saw Sydney leaning over the boat trying to catch Fluffs.  Just then Sydney lost her balance.  She almost fell out of the boat, but I caught her.  All of a sudden a huge wave hit the side of the boat and I fell out. The boatman tried to steer back to get me, but the motor stopped just then.

A wave splashed me and I went under.  I choked on seawater.  I struggled to get to the surface.  I needed air.  I was probably at least five feet under.  I opened my eyes.  I looked up at the surface.  The only thing on my mind was to get up there.

I swam up.  I started gasping for breath, but I got knocked under again.  This time something nudged me.  I went back to the surface.  I was almost unconscious.  Whatever nudged me, I was thankful for it.

I looked back to see what it was.  I saw a fin poking out of the water.  It disappeared.  I saw a grey blob swim underneath me.  I closed my eyes, afraid.

"Help!" I cried.  I couldn't hold it in, even though no one would hear me.  To myself I thought, this is the end.

When I opened my eyes, I saw a dolphin.  I calmed down a lot.  Something splashed behind me, and I turned around screaming.  I wasn't imagining it.  There was a shark, a great white shark.  I grabbed the dolphin's fin, and it started swimming away.  The shark chased us.  When I looked back again, the shark was gone.

"Thank goodness," I said.  The dolphin replied with an 'eee eee'.

I saw another island up ahead, another dolphin, too.  There was something brown in its mouth.

"Brown seaweed?" I asked aloud, as if the dolphin would answer me.  I let go of the dolphin's fin and it swam over to the other one.

Hero, I thought. A hero.  I'm going to call you Hero.

Hero took the brown thing out of the other dolphin's mouth.  Hero started swimming back to me.  I saw what was in Hero's mouth.  It was a drenched, stuffed teddy bear.

"Fluffs," I said.  "Oh, Sydney will be so happy!  I hope I can find her and Mom."

Hero made his way to me and dropped the bear beside me in the water.  I picked it up.  "Thanks, Hero." I said as I started to swim toward the shore.

When I got out of the water, I looked back at Hero.  He was leaving now.  I smiled and walked up the sandy shore.  I sat down and wondered where the boat was.  Where were Mom and Sydney?  I hoped they were okay.  I looked at the ocean.  I saw the waves crash onto the shore.  And then, in the distance, I saw a boat.  When it came closer, I saw the people.  I saw my mom and Sydney.  I ran toward the water and waited for the boat to come.  I held Fluffs behind my back.  It looked liked they got the motor fixed.  The boat came up to the dock, and everybody got out.  I ran up the dock to meet my family.

I gave my mom a hug.  Then I said to Sydney, "Guess what I have?"

Sydney asked, "What?"  I held out the stuffed bear, and she took it from my hands.  She hugged Fluffs, and thanked me for finding it.

"Are you okay, Sarah?  Are you hurt at all?" my mom asked me.

"I'm fine, Mom," I answered.

"What happened to you?" she asked.  I told her the story of the shark, and Hero saving me, and another dolphin finding Fluffs, everything.

We got a plane home the next day.  I'll never forget this trip.  I'll never forget Hero.

Okay, so when I wrote this story, I knew NOTHING about volcanoes.  So just go along with it.

I actually got annoyed with myself when I typed this up because of all the repeated words and all the sentences that started with "I".  But I wrote this story a long time ago.  I have improved a lot since then.

I have stories that I wrote even before this one that I will post later, but this was the first one I found so I put it up first.
